Who Has Tb's On Their 8v?

I was toying with the idea of dropping a GTI6/MI16 engine in my pug, then I thought that it's a bit of a shame having only a year ago had the whole engine rebuilt(spec below) Now I am thinking of putting the GSXR 1000 tb's on the 8v engine and running with a megasquirt ECU. If I was to do this what sort of BHP/torque would I be looking at?

I would give it serious thought, 8v's on TB's tend to sound better and more responsive than an equivalent 16v, with the added bonus of lighter weight (where it matters!) and simplicity.

It just seems a waste of a good engine. Would save time etc and save loads of money.

Been thinking about this over night and think that I will go ahead with the plans for the 8v. I take it that the people that have done this have used the Mangoleti manifold? Does adding the tb's have a huge decrease in mpg?

does Mi16 (XJ9J4) really weight much more than XU9J? very similar block, crank, rods and pistons, the 8v head is about 10.5kg and the 16v's is about 12kg and a pair of cams for Mi weight about 5kg only.

just a little decrease if your have an aftermarket ecu mapped properly and don't rev too high, about 5 to 8% drop in mpg but if you keep revving it high most of the time, you are about to see over 15% drop in fuel consumption. it's only my experience with the 8v. gone through from stock 8v to fast road cam and then tb... at last Mi16 w/TB. have seen a factory fact sheet (someone posted here sometime ago) showed there were no difference in power and torque below 4000rpm but after 4000rpm, Mi will say bye bye to the 8v.

Peugeot's own figures are 108kg (XU9JA) vs 122kg (XU9J4), so 14kg difference, which doesn't sound much. A 1kg bag of sugar isn't much extra weight to carry home, but hold it out at arms length and swing it about, it's weight becomes more of an issue. That's the effect of increasing engine weight on handling.

 

Economy wise a properly designed TB set up is more fficient and hence more economical than a single throttle inlet manifold. Add to that the inherent improvements of high resolution fully mapped ignition and fuelling can bring, it improves still further. The temptation to floor it is increased though, which can impact economy.

Hi Adnic69,

 

Really interested in the results you achieve with your conversion mate,

be sure to post your before and after figures along with some piccies!

 

I will also being carrying out a similar conversion on my car in the near distant

future... wife wants to overhaul our home first, so may take little longer...

 

Currently have the following parts:

 

8V fully lightened balanced (told it ran 185bhp on carbs)

Brise 120amp motorsport alternator

Brise lightweight starter motor

 

Parts to buy:

 

Throttle bodies and associated bits (fitted with engine at same time about £3000 all in)

Tony Law exhaust manifold (£545 fitted)

 

eek got some serious saving to do; that's before I even look at the paint work.

I would definitely stick with your 8V. You've just had it rebuilt and if you do decide to go for an Mi later on you can use the tb's and ecu on that anyway.
