aeinstein 0 Posted May 20, 2006 i did a quick search and couldn't find a similar tale. i've promised my pal with his mi16 i'd ask the advice of the most likely source of an answer... so, here goes. he pulled it out of the garage after a few months off the road, and it wouldn't start, low fuel etc, so added £5 of total 97 super, and it ran fine about 20 miles, then he filled it with optimax, to the brim, got about a mile, and it cut out. it felt like electrical imo, cos it didn't splutter, it just stopped. he waited 5 mins, and it started ok and ran sweetly for a few miles and then stopped again. this happened all the way back. when it dies, its not on full throttle, but shortly after usually, (coincidence?) today it conked out and wouldn't restart, and as he was turning the engine, it smelt of petrol through the exhaust. he thinks its the optimax, but i don't see it, as he syphoned it out and put it in his mates 20v fiat, which ran fine this aft, and his mi now has 97 in again. its a 80k engine which was rebuilt 2k ago, and usually runs ok. the only other thing its suffered with is ticking over high sporadically, which i believe was a missing screw in the tb butterfly, and is now fettled. has anyone else suffered like this? and how was it sorted? he is puzzled, as am i. thanks in advance, al
PsychoSimon 0 Posted May 20, 2006 tell him to check the connections around things like the coil and the ignition amplifier. mine runs an 8v coil and every now and again it used to just die, and it turned out to be a dodgy connection at the coil. Tell him to also try around the crank position sensor. these are only three things other than the ecu that have anything to do with the ignition - and my guess is it's the ignition that is the problem because it is giving it enough fuel to make it smell through the exhaust. Hope this helps, Regards, Simon
Guest Cartooner Posted May 20, 2006 Since it has been stored for a while I'd search in the fuel delivery. Pressure regulator? Fuelpump?
jackherer 543 Posted May 20, 2006 he waited 5 mins, and it started ok and ran sweetly for a few miles and then stopped again. this happened all the way back. I've had those exact symptoms and it was the crank sensor

taffycrook 2 Posted May 22, 2006 Check for sticking AFM. If you smell fuel and you have a spark its not CAS. Plus if it happens after you give it some beans my guess is AFM sticking in a high engine load position making it overfuel to the point of cutting out.
