Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted May 20, 2006 Ive got a timing issue, just finished putting all my engine back together and wired etc, when it was built up the timing holes on the 2 pulleys were lined up, cranked it over and it appears to be way out, Ive got compression out the intake so assume its sucking through exhaust. So Ive checked and the timing holes are now out, the bottom pulley is online (12 o clock) but the top pulley is about 90 degrees out (5oclock), theres no valve contact at all. Hoping someone can shed some light on how best to resolve this that doesnt involve major work. Also want confirmation its nothing to do with me using a late bottom end from a cat engine with an early head, Ive checked and the cams are the same as is the pulley so cant see how it would effect it. I just cant see a way to turn the top and bottom independntly to re-time it without valve contact.
Guest rick03054 Posted May 20, 2006 Make sure you have the crank pulley locked in the middle of the three holes. Then the pistons are halfway down so won't hit the valves.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted May 20, 2006 I agree which Rick, it sounds like you've locked it in the wrong crank pulley hole, correct one shown in this picture. Graham.
inferno 1 Posted May 20, 2006 hmmm... hijack time... ive just timed up the 2litre turbo engine according to the cam pins, but the crank pulley hole doesnt line up anywhere and it mentions a special tool to lock it in place. my pistons all seem to be level ( heads off due to suspect oil seepage from gasket). does this sound right? normally i carry this kind of job out in the car and just tipex my own timing marks, im guessing that solong as my tipex marks dont move all should be ok on reasembly? Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted May 21, 2006 I did use the right timing hole, just cant understand how its got 90 degree out. I'll do as above though and level the pistons off then try turn cam back in.
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted May 21, 2006 AAARGHHH, turned cam back in, now turns over fine, definatley compression there now, fuel pump buzzing away good spark but just wont fire. It turns over fine but every now and then kind of has a little cough.
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted May 21, 2006 well its running but theres a knocking, sounds like valve contacting(just) but timing is bang on.
