Cambelt To Camchain Conversion

Recommended Posts

Does anyone make such a thing for a 1.6 GTi? I know the belt is lighter and better performance wise, but I don't fancy the idea of one breaking while I'm on the track, because basically I couldn't afford to replace damaged parts.

I dont think you will find anybody who does such a kit. The main problem would be that cars with cam chains as standard have them actually inside the engine casing, so that they chain can be lubricated by the engine oil to prevent it from seizing up.

If you have an external chain you would have to run something like a motorbike chain lubing system where by oil is periodically dripped onto the chain. this would then lead to it being thrown about your cam chain cover/engine bay and being very messy.

Your best bet is to change the cam belt early on, rather than trying to get every last mile out of it.

i, like yourself am paranoid about the belt breaking so i change mine every 15-20k - as it doesnt cost much for a new one, and seems silly not to really if you have the time etc etc.

Regards,

Simon

I've never heard of it being done & doubt it has been for the exact reason Simon mentions.

If a belt is changed within the recommended intervals (36k or three years not Peugeots) you should have no problem unless the cause of the failure is either due to the tensioner breaking up, belt failing due to it not running true / out of alighment or the belt being part of a bad batch & failing prematurely.

Graham.
