Painting The Plastic Trims On My Gti

Recommended Posts

johnrobertgordon

Well i have replaced the crusty pattern part wing someone has bodged on the front and blocked up the big hole in the roof (aka sunroof). Its going for a respray this weekend (ford diamond white) and was thinking of painting all of the trims white too.

Has any one else painted these? i dont want them to look tacky after a few months so i need the paint to stick..............but on the same note my mate is trying to put me off, he thinks they wont look right in white......what do you think? Its a rally car so i think it will look good with big red mud flaps and a red stripe in the trim.

Not a fan on colour coding 205s. Looks much better with the trim as peugeot intended. Its your car though!

It suits the french rallyes.

But painting them black maybe wiser, plus a few on the forum have already done it with good results.

make sure they are rubbed down really well, and wiped down with lots of thiners or white spirit to get any residue of bumper black polish off them.

then use a good quality plastic primer, then some nice thick filler primer to cover up any imperctions and then spray as normal. making sure you flat down thorughly in between each coat.

ive just done on my s16 plastic bits and it looks ok, only used rattle cans this time but have just got a nice compressor and set of gravity feed guns so will be doing them all again after fcs

If your using a proper spray gun make sure you use plasticizer(sp) in the paint, or itll crack off.

Should look alright colour coded, seeing as its a rally car - quite period in fact, with the odd decal etc - and if you don't like it for any reason a couple of cans of plasticote satin black and hey presto back to black!!

If it's a rally car, won't the chances of a scuff or prang be a little higher? If so, wouldn't it be better to keep the bumpers standard colour in case of change?

Personally I prefer a nice crisp white shell with a contrasting black trim looks really good. Normally I'm not fond of white cars, but since owning one (205) I think it could look very nice.

I did look at a Skip Brown white car many years ago that was colour coded but the paint had started to flake. It looked very tatty despite being only small areas. I guess if you're going to do it, it needs doing properly.
