Rear Bumpstop Replacement

Recommended Posts

Sam

Has anyone ever replaced a bumpstop? One of mine just fell off when doing the arches and I need to fit a new one, all I have visible is a 13mm headed bolt, is it likely to come out easily? The shell is a K plate 92.

hi sam

thats pretty much all i had left on both sides of mine on mine however the bolts had rusted solid and the heads of them were no use for a socket. i'd prehaps in the first instance get a bit of heat on them as trying to get penerating oil to defy gravity will be a bit of a task :) also if the heats have rusted try whatick on a slightly smaller imperial size socket

If that fails then do what i did and grind off the bolts and put 2 holes in the metal cup bit of the new bumpstops and drill 2 small pilot holes in the plate on the car where the previous bolt was and attach the cup using self tapping screws. I did need to swing the trailing arms out of the way mind you to get the drill in but i did this when i was setting my rear beam height so i'd already pulled out torsion bars.

i'd try the first two options first as they will be quicker and easier than what i had to do

Just use the heatgun a little bit.

Then just unscrew them.

No problems on my 1984! shell at least when doing it that way. :)

if the bolt rounds of, just cut or drill the bolt head off. although the bolt will proberbly snap off anyway.

then i drilled 2 holes on my bumstop plate and body bit and pop rivited the plate on.

Thanks for the tips, I'll probably be removing my torsion bars to lower ride height a touch anyway so I'll have a bash then, and fit my new bilstein shocks. Fingers crossed they unscrew (doubtful though)
