Injector Off Time

Recommended Posts

recent starting problems have now been simplified to a point but have left myself, a friend and anthony (via phone conversation :D) baffled!

i am getting a spark and fuel is reaching injectors.... but the injection only occurs when you stop cranking. When cranking its getting a 9v pulse and the earth is fine but when you stop cranking it gives two short bursts of injection.

I cut and rewired the ecu and tachy relay under dash part of loom but checked wire numbers and ciruit tested... And injection loom is correct from ecu.

possible problems i and anthony can think of are:

the signal wire to ecu

the 3pin plug from dizzy to ignition amp

tachy relay (although pumps working etc)

coil wiring back to front?????

any help would be appreciated as need MOT on tuesday :(

also anyone with a complete intact phase1 / 1.5 engine loom will be my best friend :D:ph34r:

this could be totally wide of the mark but... many years ago I had an old bedford cf. it would not start on the key/starter. eventually this was traced to the starter motor drawing too much current and not leaving enough for ignition circuit. In the case of the cf there was a "switch" on the starter that diverted power somehow which obviously is nothing like the pug but I wonder if it may be a voltage drop whilst cranking prob? does yours bump start?

wire from dizzy to igintion amp is OK if you are getting a spark. My vote would be something in relation to getting the signal to the ECU to tell it that the engine is running. This I think comes from the coil but I could be wrong.

well anthony suggested spinning the inner arm of dizzy that slots into cam and seeing if engine injects..... and it doesn't.....

i am not a fan of electrics and rather stumped at present by this..

its just strange how they get a pulse yet don't inject???

How do you know when the injectors are/aren't working?

Have you tried another ECU?

If the ignition amp is firing the spark plugs then you know the signal is OK from the dizzy to ignition amp and from there to the coil and spark plugs. That leaves a problem in the wiring to or from the ECU or the ECU its self.

Probably the easiet thing to try is to borrow an ECU and swap it out to rule this out as a possibility.

i have tryed a spare ecu (one i had on previous 1.9 engine) but will try a friends when he pops over tonight...

as for injectors , i've removed fuel rail and pulled the complete setup out of inlet to watch them inject...

they are getting a pulse of 9v under cranking and do inject when you stop the cranking.

Well I'm pretty sure the injectors are switched earth rather than swithced 12V. TBH without an oscilloscope you aren't going to be able to tell that much about the pulses themselves though. It is however, interesting that you seem to be measuring some activity. I see what you mean about it being odd.

Given that you appear to be getting pulses it would seem to indicate that the ECU is getting the signal that the engine is running. Would be nice to know what the pulses look like but I bet the chances of you getting a scope are nil.

In that case I think I'd look at the power feed to the injectors, and (if you are brave) you could try switching the injectors on by hand. I'd study the wiring diagrams very carefully before trying either of the above though. If they are switched earth then you can short an earth connection to the ECU side of the injector - however, take care as this is not without risk, especially with fuel around.

well got it sorted and its now running :)

turned out the coil was wired up right but the friend who came to help had switched tacho and live round. oh well at least she runs :P
