205 8v On Tb's Latest Rroad Output

anyone remember the thread about the 8v on bodies with a reputed 180hp output (but only on carbs) from a certain "geezer automotive developments" ? and the article in Circuit Driver and the resulting 131hp?

turned out the exhaust backbox was very restrictive. anyway customer bought a 4 branch manifold and a group n system - back up to emerald - 149 hp at 7000 rpm. don't know what it would hold beyond this as DW only tested it to 7k. In fairness customer didn't know what it should be taken to and its a shame it wasn't taken higher as it may have put out a bit more or a least even if power was the same at 8k the car could well accelerate faster if revved higher.

so nearly 20hp from exhaust is good, but 149 from the spec is still awful (head, cam "300deg" is all they will say about it), new pistons, 45mm jenveys, iresa manifold, group n system) so my hunch is the head is next to useless or next to standard ! the customer has been speaking to me since he got the engine done and has been very unhappy with the service he has received overall from GAD. he will now be sticking with one company (me!) as he's found all the conflicting views from people a real pain. He trusts me and I will be speaking with a couple of contacts I believe can deliver the goods at the right price.

we hope a head and cam swap will do but I suspect squish will need work too.

I remember the thread well. I hope you remember my prediction it was the exhaust causing at least some of the problem. I wasn't aware the engine builder was a known quantity, or at least not disclosed at the time, but the one you suggest doesn't come as a surprise. Strange they can't get even close to 160 bhp with a big cam and TB's when they claim it routinely on a mild cam (well very mild because they measure up the same as std) and std induction. I can tell you exactly what the head will be like because I've seen them but you'll find out yourself when you strip it down. The final figures now tie in nicely with what the claimed 160 bhp engine actually produces (about 130) plus a set of TB's. Whether you really do have more cam in this one you'll find out when you measure it. If you don't know how to do that then post on here in due course.

Now maybe you have some idea why I have such an issue with these people, their absurd power claims and the poor sods they've ripped off over the years.

yes I do, it was when I stuck a pipe down it and found out it was one of those restrictive types my eyes were really opened. A straight through OE pipe would not have killed it so much. beware pattern parts!

cam has 300 deg stamped on it. i suspect a bad copy of the group a rally cam. it certainly isn't standard. i have a dial gauge but suspect that you measure with degree wheel on crank and with dial gauge. tell you what I will send it to you when we have it out for in depth analysis :D

Another miss guided soul.

If you say or hear something enough it becomes a fact or urban myth, I mean how many people think the 8v version of an engine produces more torque than the 16v.

180 bhp is possible with the 8v motor I have seen it with my own eyes, but the work to achieve this magical figure consists of more than a cam and carbs/tb's.

Thats the bits you can see or sell easily but other factors such as flow CR and a safe btm end are equally as important. These however are less visable and harder to sell/detect.

If it was as easy as people make out there would be no need for the mi16 conversion.

Hmm - maybe the 'poor mis-guided souls' just enjoy spouting absurd horse power (or should that be horse sh@t) figures, propping up the bar of their local, and thus are happy to be ripped off so long as they have the xudos of such claims? :D
