max0 5 Posted May 16, 2006 (edited) yes you read that correct...The old girls bleed nipple decided to snap off in the caliper. The joys of owning a 205. My dad has some screw extracters that have a left hand tread which you screw in then undo the normal way. which i might give a try but was woundering if anyone else knows of a good way to extract them? cheers for any help. Anthony 1,003 Posted May 16, 2006 I've rarely had any success with ez-outs, as usually if they were corroded in enough to snap the nipple then you're on a hiding to nothing to get them out with an ez-out. Only real way is to drill them out, but you have to be very very careful doing so, as if you drill crooked or too far down then the caliper is basically ruined (or atleast you're going to need to source and drill/tap out a larger bleed nipple). It's a common issue and doing a search should reveal plenty...

Its not mega corroded which surprised me when it snapped. I thought "oooo that was easy" n i didnt apply much presure then had the horror of seeing the end still in the ring spanner. My Dad said to try giving it some heat and to use the left handed thing with loads of wd-40. just woundering if anyone else has a method rather than drilling it out? Ive stopped work for the day on it and will think it over and try to remove it tomorrow. Thanks Andy Andy

laser green 1.9 0 1 Cars Posted May 16, 2006 I've just sheered the stud extractor trying to get one of mine out. I had been soaking it in plus gas for a week and it still wouldn't budge then I felt some movement only to see the extractor snapped in too. keep us posted on how you get on. I had been soaking it in plus gas for a week and it still wouldn't budge then I felt some movement only to see the extractor snapped in too. keep us posted on how you get on. just realised how common this problem is! only happened to me once in nine years. got a supply of s/h callipers now and i think i'll unscrew all the nipples + chuck the ones that break! With s/h calipers cheap enough at the scrappies it may be a good idea to keep at least one pair spare if you can get them? as this sort of problem always seems to occur at the worst possible moment! hengti 2 Posted May 16, 2006 (edited) where is the best place to get refurbed calipers as i have the same problem with one of my rear calipers aswell, the bleed nipple has snapped off and the caliper is siezedcheers matt some High St places can order them, GSF/Eurocarparts do them - about £60 each for rebuilt ones i don't think they're particularly cheap for what they are and the job can add up if you've got to do both, and buy brake fluid etc. it's a real nause - just over snapped bleed screws! and it's impossible to drill the little feckers out i was well narked when mine snapped (both of them) - so i bought a pair of genuine pug bleed screws too (the pattern ones that came with mine looked as though they'd rust up in no time) and used copper grease on the threads. this was about 2-3 years ago now and i've recently had to bleed the r brakes again for the first time since - and was pleased to note that the nipples were relatively easy to free off Edited May 16, 2006 by hengti
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted May 16, 2006 I soaked one of mine in Plusgas and then my brother put a few blobs of weld on the end of the nipple and then welded a nut on to the top and just screwed it out. You get more strength when it is solid weld so can usually exert more pressure without the problems. Exchange calipers are pretty cheap too. I don't like easy outs as I have caused more grief by using them as the snap off! Drilling out can fill your caliper with swarf and then you can damage the seat so they leak

Im gona search and see if you can get brass bleed nipples or something that wont rust. Deffo not gona be a skin flint and buy new ones for the back which came undo ok.
