Guest antgel Posted May 16, 2006 (edited) The new starter is in, so thanks to all who helped. I have a problem with the clutch arm link. Just to confirm what I mean by that, I'm referring to the part with the 22mm bolt, which the clutch cable terminates in. It has a spring between itself and the clutch arm going into the (BE1) gearbox. I undid the 22mm bolt and put the link assembly to one side while I removed the starter. By the way, I have no idea what people mean by the "pin". Now the new starter is in but I can't really remember how the link goes back together. I have screwed the 22mm bolt back in, but the top edge of the link won't stay parallel with the front of the car. It points up at an angle from left to right. The clutch pedal is on the floor. I also can't get the little spring to stay on convincingly. I don't want to tighten the 22mm bolt any more as I'm not sure if it's back together properly. This is so hard to describe, I hope it makes sense. [ASCII art diagram deleted as the forum didn't display it properly.] As I said, the right-angle link arm is tilting up at 45 degrees or so. Put another way, something should be holding the arm as above, and holding the pedal up, but it isn't. Surely I don't need to start adjusting the cable? Can anyone help? Can anyone confirm the right order of the numerous rubber and metal washers at the 22mm bolt? Anyone got any photos? Haynes has nothing on the subject. Maybe I missed something simple. I've been working on the car for hours tonight and I'm going mad. NB I am desperate. I need the car for an urgent journey on Wednesday. jackherer 543 Posted May 16, 2006 By the way, I have no idea what people mean by the "pin". Sounds like you've lost it then! The pin (8x41mm) goes between the arm that sticks through the gearbox casing and the arm you attach to the gearbox with a 22mm bolt. The pin isn't attached in any way, its just held in place by the tension of the cable. As you say its hard to describe these things, hopefully someone will come along soon with a pic that shows how it goes together, you'll be able to improvise a pin out of an old bolt with the head removed or something if you can't find the original pin. (btw try enclosing your ascii art in [ code] foo [/ code] tags - without the spaces)

I do know what the pin is, and indeed it is on my garage shelf where I left it. /antgel goes to fit the clutch pin to see if that improves the situation.
