Recommend Me A Filler

Recommended Posts

mak

I've done a search and theres some damned helpfull posts out there about applying the stuff, especially from our resident painter, but not much on what people actually use.

I normally use p38 but find it always cracks, i'm guessing cos its a bit naff but might be my technique?

Anyhow can anyone recommend a muts nuts filler. I dont care how much it costs I just dont want a big crack in my paint work!

Crap, don't say that, i've been using P38.

Not had too many problems in the past with it, but maybe Andy may well be able to shed some light.

How thick are you putting the P38 on, and what (exactly) are you using it for?

Trying to use too thick a layer really reduces a fillers flexibility, which can lead cracks. Also trying to bridge gaps between dissimilar materials will generally cause it to crack too.

Personally, I use U-Pol Easy 1, but I don't pay anywhere near the price on that site!

Yeah I've found a much cheaper supplier of u-pol. I was told the U-pol extra was even better than that stuff so am thinking of using that.

When I've used p38 before it has been to fill a rather large gap to be fair, but i didnt over apply it.

This time i need to rebuild the body work (3mm or so) in a small patch where I had to grind some rust out. Its just to smooth out the grinder marks and build the level back up.

Should be fine at that, but if you need to go much thicker than that at any time, I'd recommend a fiberglass/bridging filler first, to make up most of the thickness, then finish off with standard stuff

I've not used Extra, so can't comment on it. I always stick with Easy 1, 'cos I hate sanding ;)
