Starter Motor Haynes-related Hell

Recommended Posts

Guest antgel

1.9 F-reg non-cat. The inlet manifold is off. I now only have the three 8mm allen bolts to remove, on the flywheel side of the starter. However, Haynes doesn't mention that the clutch cable bracket ends right next to one of of the three allen bolts. I can't get an 8mm allen socket in there. What do I do now (apart from cry)?

I can't believe that this isn't in Haynes, but I'm sure lots of you have come up against this.

You have to remove the clutch arm by first removing the pin that holds it in place, then you can acess the starters allen key bolt

Take the clutch arm off the gearbox, I take it you have a Be1 gearbox (reverse next to first)?

If not you just need an 8mm allen key instead of a socket & ratchet handle.

Graham.

If you remove all the other bolts first, and then slacken off the awkward bolt as much as possible you might be able to knock the starter loose enough so that you can turn it at an angle and get better access.

as posted you can remove the arm or unscrew the large nut that holds it on until you can get your allen key in.

i didnt remove my inlet manifold i just removed the front bar in the engine bay and moved the radiator out of the way slightly then got it out, if its the really fat starter id replace it with the smaller more powerful diesel one. i had to replace mine 4 times as the fat ones failed all the time ;)

Errm - use a hammer and chisel rather than slacken the clutch cable and take out one bolt? Not what I'd call clever.

Clever would be doing it without removing inlet or moving the rad (just take off a couple of oil pipes).

Can you not try using different type 8mm allen keys?

Removing the clutch arm is quite a pain. What i tend to do is, undo the other 2 8mm bolts. And because you can't undo the bolt all the way out because it hits the clutch arm etc, but as you undo, pull the starter away, towards the drivers side wing of the car. If you get me?

I don't remember having any problems removing mine. I guess the lesson here is that Haynes can be less than helpful in most areas, often skimming stuff, or completely missing it.

You will have to get used to improvising when working on the Pug.
