frodo_monkey 0 Posted May 13, 2006 Hi all, My 205 is a racecar, competing in the Northern Saloon & Sports Car Championship Class D. At the mo the engine is basically standard, though I am planning on a Superchips ECU in the not-too-distant future. I want to get myself another 1.6 engine, and rebuild it myself 'cos I've never done it and I want to learn! The regs for the championship are: Classes B, C & D Vehicles based on cars produced for road use and retaining the original chassis & silhouette. Any air intake fitted to the bonnet must not break the silhouette by more than 10cm. Aerodynamic wings may not be fitted with the exception of homologated or series production items for that specific vehicle. A front spoiler may be fitted but the width must not exceed the width of the car across the front wheel arches and must not project more than 150mm beyond the original bodywork. The spoiler must be entirely below the wheel centres. All body panels must be in the original material with the exception of the bonnet and boot lid / tailgate. The windscreen must remain in laminated glass. The remaining glass may be replaced with polycarbonate of minimum 4mm thickness. Perspex may not be used. Competitors are reminded that it is necessary to be able to ventilate the passenger compartment. Headlights may be removed but the aperture must be covered by either a solid metal or plastic cover or by mesh of no more than 10mm hole. 5.6 EngineModifications are free with the exception of Class G, however classes B, C & D must utilise an engine by the original marque. Forced induction engines will be subject to a 70% increase in capacity and will be classed accordingly. Rotary engines will be subject to a 40% increase in capacity and will be classed accordingly. The Organisers retain the right to instruct the Eligibility Scrutineer to seal and check engines. The Championship will carry the Scrutineers cost but the dismantling and reassembly will be at the competitors expense. Where practical, competitors are advised to have engines checked and sealed by an MSA Scrutineer at the time of assembly. So, what do you reckon would make a powerful and torquey 1.6? Its got to be a 1.6 as I don't want to go up a class. I can afford around £500-£1000 over the course of the year. Apart from the engine, I plan on fitting a Quaife ATB LSD to the 1.6 box, run 15" alloys with Yoko A048Rs, and lighten the hell out of the car. Your thoughts please gentlemen! Frodo on that budget you are stuck with 8v but things can be done, you need more cam and carb's ecu for ign and you are running out of budget. Or make what you have got future proof, invest in a quality rebuild and head work/xu10 head use stock induction and a cam this would see you to the 125-130 bhp mark. Next season you can afford more....the list is endless
jonD6B 0 Posted May 13, 2006 Don't waste your money on a chip they're next to useless. If it's a race car I'd personally invest in good suspension, brakes and lightening the right areas. I'd possibly look at corner weights aswell. It's not all about power.
joris_andriesse 8 Posted May 13, 2006 Is it possible to put an 1.9 or 2 L head on a 1.6? I think the won't see the difference.
frodo_monkey 0 Posted May 14, 2006 So, how about a general stripdown, cleanup and rebuild, with a rebore. Added to this a hotter cam (285?), a pair of Weber 40s and some work on polishing and porting the head? I could add a few hundred to the budget if needed! dodsworth_gti 11 Posted May 15, 2006 my 1.6 consists of a race spec built (aparently) engine, head work, piper 285 cam and r1 carbs, goes well!!!
frodo_monkey 0 Posted May 15, 2006 Sounds nice! How much roughly did the R1 carbs set you back? Also, are you running a Megasquirt or something like that?
Malachy 0 Posted May 15, 2006 Sounds nice! How much roughly did the R1 carbs set you back? Also, are you running a Megasquirt or something like that? ???? why would you need to run an fuel injection ecu with a carbrettor?
