Guest andyfitz Posted May 13, 2006 Hi guys, There's a few problems on my 205, so im going to buy a 1.9 to use for parts, I want to rebuild the 1.9 beam also seeing im buying a full car, and fit this to my 1.6 gti. Is it just a strait swap? or is there other bits I will need also? What parts will i need for the rebuild of the 1.9 beam?
jonD6B 0 Posted May 13, 2006 The obvious difference is that the 1.9's have discs opposed to drums on the rear but aside from that they're the same fitment. Do a search, it will give you rucks of info. to work with.
Guest andyfitz Posted May 13, 2006 Ok I will do a search for this also and see what I get back. I know about the disks, thats why I thought there might be some other bits aside the beam that need changing, I.E a compensator valve or something, your saying it's a direct swap then? cheers
Wurzel 16 Posted May 14, 2006 The 1.9 uses a seperate compensator for each rear disc as each brake fed from it's own port on the brake master cylinder. The 1.6 model uses a single output, through a single compensator and then runs along the car to the rear axle. It's then split via T-Piece on the left hand side of the car near the beam. The flexi pipes for the beam are in the same place for both types of beam though so you can happily use the 1.6 system on the 1.9 beam. It will save you a few quid on the compensators especially as purchasing second hand ones is a bit of a lottery with respect to them working correctly. Budget on knacking a brake line getting them detached. Even with the correct brake union spanners, the pipe often 'sticks' within the union and twists with it. This obviously isn't good on a solid tube. Once apart though, the unions can often be separated and reused. I usually chop the pipe if it goes this way so that I can make a good link pipe. Purchase some new rear beam mounts as well, the old ones will undoubtedly be nadged if they are the original ones.
Guest andyfitz Posted May 14, 2006 cheers dude, seems about as strait forward as I was thinking, im most likely going to replace the brake pipes too as there abit crusty, and prob fit braided flexy pipes
