Adjusting Timing

Recommended Posts

Thomo206

Alright Guys

I am needing help to get the timing set up on my 205 1.9 GTI. I stripped the head down to put a new head gasket I have had the head skimmed whilst doing this. I replaced all gaskets and then changed the timing belt and tensioners well a mate did. When I am driving I am getting flat spots and it has been said that this might be the dizzy cap needing adjusted to improve the timing.

Can someone confirm this is correct that the dizzy just needs moved before I end up breaking something?

Cheers Thomo

What fuel are you running it on?

Adjusting the dizzy can't break anything imo, it doesn't have that much adjustment & only changes when it sparks.

Graham.

1) Mark it where it is so if it all goes tits up you know where you started from.

2) Loosen the two 11mm nuts holding the dizzy and advance it a bit (turn the dizzy clockwise looking at it from the cap).

3) tighten the nuts and go for a spin. Use lots of throttle at low revs (very low revs) - does it pink?

4) If pinking then retard it until it stops, if no pinking then advance it until it does then retard about a degree or so from the point where it starts pinking.

Rob

P.S. You will get better results from 98RON Optimax or Tesco's 99RON or even 97 RON SUPER than 95RON Unleaded.

P.P.S. If you change fuel then you need to repeat the above to get the best results.

By normal I take it you mean 95ron unleaded. The 1.9 GTi was never made to run on unleaded unless it was one of the later CAT equipped ones.

Adjusting timing as Rob says above.

Cheers for the advice I meant that its running 95 RON. It is 87 GTI so it should have been leaded but has been changed to unleaded.

I will give this a go tonight as I will keep you posted tomorrow or Wednesday.

Final got round to sorting the car tonight after the great Scottish weather.

When we rebuilt the engine the person never lined the marks that we put on it origonally. So we just turned it back and its running great.
