Problems Fitting A Track Rod End

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

Got a pair of new track rods ends from GSF at the weekend.

Went out last night to fit them on the car. First one seemed to go on OK but I didn't tighten nut up all the way as I didn't have my torque wrench with me.

Came to do the second one and as soon as the nut got down to the nylock thread, the bolt was just turning with it. Does this mean it's a duff part? I can't see any way of holding the bolt whilst doing up the nut as there is nothing at the base/bottom, and no allen key fitment on the top like you have with the drop links.

Help :D

Yeah, some track rod ends are like that.

I usually put a jack underneath and pump it up a bit, it seems to provide enough friction to do it up tight. :D

Any other suggestions?

I'd like to get an idea before I leave work at half 5.

yep i do that aswell, just put enough pressure on the under side so that itforced the joint up, will then do up no probs at all.

if you push the bottom of the TRE into the hub eg with a jack then it normally locks the threaded part so when you tighten the bolt it doesn't turn

You can pinch it up with a G clamp too, to stop the thread turning.

Also, if you are ever doing some work and need to re-tighten a track rod end or balljoint that isn't brand new, try using a wire brush on a dremel to clean up the thread first, works wonders.

Ok Ahl, chill out buddy, I wasn't being unappreciative. I just wanted to see if anyone else had any comments before I go home today.

I'll give it a try tonight.

Thanks
