jonah 1 Posted May 9, 2006 I've dismantled my rear beam to make sure it wasn't full of water after its little adventure on Sunday (see Twyford 2WD Rally thread for story!). It hasn't started rusting yet, thankfully, but some water has got past the seals and looks like it's emulsified with the grease in the bearings. Anyone got any tips / ideas for cleaning it out and renewing the grease? The bearings are still inside the beam tube which is still fitted to the car. I can get to the outers easily enough with rags but the inners are tricky to get at...
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted May 9, 2006 If you can use a solvent degreaser & get all the old stuffout & then gradually repack them with as much grease as you can get in. The new bearings I've bought recently don't actually seem to have grease in but oil. I always pack them before fitting anyway. Hopefully the inners will be OK but it might be worth replacing them whilst its apart if the arm shafts are good. Or trying torun some grease into the with a long handle screwdriver? Pack the gap between the seal & outer bearing with grease when you put it all back together. Graham.
Anthony 1,003 Posted May 9, 2006 Unless you've done it recently, might be worth just replacing the bearings and seals as a matter of course? Atleast with the bearings out you can ensure all the old grease/water mix is out and you'll know the beam should be good for the rest of the season (so long as you avoid the solid things )
jonah 1 Posted May 9, 2006 Job done! I used a wooden pole with rag wrapped around the end and soaked in meths as a solvent to get the old grease out of the inner bearings. Took ages but they're now packed with nice clean grease. Seals and (outer) bearings were new last August, so shoud be good for a while yet. Am impressed that there's no damage to the bearings or shafts after they've taken some seriously heavy landings...

jonah 1 Posted May 10, 2006 Best starting a new topic for this (or searching), but I have tarmac-spec Billies, although I'd also recommend Koni Sports as being good VFM.
