Need Help With Brake Conversion Please

Recommended Posts

Guest foz mi16

Ok here it goes, i purchased a brake conversion for my 205 gti the other day, now the lad i bought em off showed me them fitted on his 1.9 gti and i took them off with him! However when i came to fit them to my car the caliper carrier once bolted up doesnt allow the brake disc to fit on! Basically the disc is fitting too far out so the it needs to come back towards the hub!? Anyone any ideas, i will try get some pics later on but any ideas for now? Is the 1.6 and 1.9 hubs different because my car was originally a 1.6 before i bought it so im thinking it might be something to do with that?

Sorry for the essay, any help will be much appreciated

sounds like you got 1.6hubs, they are different to the 1.9hubs, and 1.9 discs wont fit 1.6hubs, due to the 1.6 ones being wider, which is why you cant get the disc to go right back.

Thank you, i did a search on here and have read loads of different things now! Now i dont know a great deal about mechanical stuff so what is classed as the hub and am i right in thinking that if i change to the 1.9 gti hub do i need 1.9 gti driveshafts also?

If you go to 1.9 hubs, you will need the 1.9 driveshafts too mate.

This sounds like a lot of hassle! Without sounding too dumb is it this a hard job and is it hard to get the 1.9 setup? Trying to get my car back on road asap really! I got a gti-6 box in not sure if that makes a difference!

Thanks for the help so far lads

What are the brakes?

Is it a custom setup or taken from another car. What I am trying to get at, will 1.6L discs work with your conversion ie: the ones you've taken off, and if there too small a diameter for the calipers your fitting are larger dia discs available. One for the track boys to answer.

Right didnt go into that so i didnt make it more confusing for anyone lol basically the discs are brand new 283mm ones off a 307 (same as 206 gti 180) as far as i know! Calipers are 406 ones they have the 57 stamped on them and the carriers im not quite sure about but think they are 406 ones also but they have been machined to fit! Which they did to the 1.9 they was on just not to my 1.6 which is clear why now! Just trying to find some 1.9 hubs and shafts for the right money now! And any knowledge anyone has on changing them would be great, just like is it easy or is it a pain

Ok so your original 1.6L discs do not line up with the new calipers?

Just popped out to check and it looks like they do line up with my 1.6 discs yes but obviously wouldnt work as the diameter of my 1.6 discs are standard and the new discs i have to match trhese calipers are 283mm!

Ok so now either change to 1.9L hubs etc..

or you've a second option find larger disc to fit the 1.6L 205.

As i said the track or rally racers will know if bigger disc are available.

All the best

I think you can fit base model hubs with your current driveshafts which will be the right offset for the big brakes.
