hengti 2 Posted May 8, 2006 (edited) crunchy reverse - maybe it's not going fully into gear - ? alot of cars have this problem - put it into fourth before reverse - usually helps creaky steering could be a few things - i'd check that it's not just the steering wheel rubbing against the dash to start with. otherwise - top mounts, tie rod ends, drop links, cv joints etc etc Edited May 8, 2006 by hengti
matty_gti 20 Posted May 8, 2006 ok, cheers chap. yeah i thort it mite be from the steering hiiting somthing inside but it sounds like it coming from just in the middle of the bolk head, thats why i thought it mite be the steering rack. when you mean top mounts do you mean engine mounts?. hengti 2 Posted May 8, 2006 (edited) sorry - top mounts in the front strut assembly; there's a bearing in the front strut assembly that allows for steering movement - they wear with age and can cause steering related probs - they're at the top of the spring though, so probably difficult to confuse with a column/rack knock worth checking that the steering rack and column clamps are tight as well if you've got a knock from that area. then check the track rod ends (not the tie rod ends - there aren't any of those - apols!). if the knocking is definitely coming from the steering, it could only then be the rack/column that are worn i'd have thought edit : you need to be sure of where the knocking is coming from really. does it do it whilst you move the s'wheel when parked? if so, get someone to waggle the wheel whilst you feel for what's knocking underneath the car Edited May 8, 2006 by hengti
