laser_GTI 1 Posted May 7, 2006 (edited) Had some very scary moments recently in my pug in wet conditions. I have Toyo Proxes with loads of tread left and i check my tyre pressures every fortnight. It seems i have no grip at the front end. I steer in and it just understeers. Its fine in the dry but a handfull in the wet. Is there anything i can do? twowheelterror 0 Posted May 7, 2006 Hit the nail on the head there Karlos - simple fact is you are carrying too much speed into the corner.
Butler 0 Posted May 8, 2006 I had the same issue this morning, although I was going a bit quick. In heavy rain proxies aqua plain a lot once under about 1/2 thread depth. I guess you are running 195 wide tyres, stiff suspension all on a pretty light car. So its to be expected.
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted May 8, 2006 Get eagle f1's there awesome in the wet..
Ahl 4 Posted May 8, 2006 Get eagle f1's there awesome in the wet.. and from my bitter experience, far better than Toyo T1-R's...
rich_w 0 Posted May 8, 2006 I don't have any problems with toyos in the wet, maybe if there is a deep puddle i may feel the car pulling a bit, maybe i'm not driving fast enough :S
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted May 8, 2006 Try Avon ZV1s in the wet with a tweaked engine! The Eagle F1s on my 309 are way better (and that would be useful if the 309 would run for longer than 5 minutes at a time without something falling off!) Really though number one advice is enter the corners slower, if you enter too fast and attempt to slow down mid-corner then you are likely to be dumped into the nearest hedge. Having said that, with control, wet conditions are great for some LOO moments
Baz 421 Posted May 8, 2006 I'm having the same problem, badly!! Scary, only i think it's tracking issues rather than tyres or too much corner speed, i'm sensible, honest!!
laser_GTI 1 Posted May 8, 2006 i don't drive fast in the wet. i'm experiencing this at relatively low speeds
mfield 20 Posted May 8, 2006 You say you check your tyre pressure but what pressure do you run it at ?
hengti 2 Posted May 8, 2006 (edited) ^^ yes the more pressure you run, the more likely you are to be losing grip in the wet i've always run 28/26 front/rear on the road edit : make sure you're using an accurate tyre pressure gauge as well (some of the digital ones are cheap and are guaranteed to within 1psi) - the gauges on foot pumps and garage forecourts can be crazy inaccurate Edited May 8, 2006 by hengti
jonD6B 0 Posted May 8, 2006 30 when cold? Try Hengti's advice and drop your pressures slightly. Could also check your suspensuion geometry.
mrswampy 0 Posted May 8, 2006 try haveing toyo tyres on a rear wheel drive car that like to spin up in 3rd gear!!! made for interesting lap of a roundabout whilst trying to get past a van that had annoyed me by going slow for far too long!!
rich_w 0 Posted May 8, 2006 How new/old are the tyres? How much thread is left?
rossimura 0 Posted May 8, 2006 Mine has always been wayward in the wet. I've got Avon AVz1's on at the minute and they are a laugh, turn in slide, lift off weeee . In the dry I have more grip than I can realistically use on the road. Just be abit more gentle with it 205's require a wee bit of driving finesse
hengti 2 Posted May 8, 2006 the pressures won't be helping - they're quite sensitive to them - i've certainly noticed quite a difference between 28 and low 30s on the front - the steering's alot lighter with more air - that'll make it understeer in the wet not suggesting it'll be 'transformed', but less air will help an accurate gauge is a must though could be the tracking, but should be fairly obvious if it is - they feel horrible if the tracking's out failing that - just use the rear to keep the nose straight! be careful in the wet though! best to quietly experiment on an industrial estate, about 4 in the morning
laser_GTI 1 Posted May 9, 2006 tracking is spot on and tyres are less than 12 months old. Will try altering the tyre pressures slighty and take it a little easier. I must admit the toyos perform exellent in the dry. thanks for the advice guys!
rich_w 0 Posted May 9, 2006 Whats the amount of thread left? I found when my proxies were low on thread (less than 3/4mm) the grip dropped off quick...
collateral 0 Posted May 11, 2006 Give 26psi up front and 28 on the rear a try. Running a lower pressure up front will decrease understeer. On my car running 29+ in the rear causes horrible things to happen, but that could be due to the tyres being crap. Eagles are on the shopping list!
