smckeown 1 Posted May 6, 2006 Does the ECU need to be powered up via the loom in order for the PC to make a cionnetcion via the Com port ? I'd have thought you'd be able to disconnect the ECU take it home and connect to your laptop and internet to upgrade the firmware ?
Super Josh 4 Posted May 6, 2006 The ECU will need 12 Volts via the ECU plug to allow the PC to talk to it, the Com port doesn't have any provision to supply power. I suppose most people download the Firmware onto the laptop and then take it out to the car to perfrom the upgrade. Although when i first received my Emerald ECU, I made up a power only loom from a 12V power supply and used that to allow me to communicate with the ECU using my desktop PC. smckeown 1 Posted May 6, 2006 looks like the only way to get the latest firmware is via the kms firmware upgrader, and that needs to be connected to the ECU in order to function. So you have to be both connected to the ECU and internet at the same time..arse!
taffycrook 2 Posted May 20, 2006 not a big issue, I use a cheap bty charger to power up my ecu's to map them before install.

16v205 9 Posted May 24, 2006 If its just 12v DC you need to power the kms near the computer then you have a perfect power source right in front of you assuming your not using a laptop. Open the PC case and find a white 4 pin Molex connector, on the connecter pin out the yellow (+12v) and a black wire on the same connector as ground. Just run a wire from the molex to the ecu and back, bit of insulating tape as were only bodging and you have a 12v DC source without buying anything. d-9 0 Posted May 24, 2006 Yeah it is 12v DC, the only slightly scary bit is powering it up praying youve got the right pins on the KMS!
