Advice On Removing A Backbox

Recommended Posts

S33GAV

Hey

Am trying to remove the horrible badboy backbox on my miami, and am having some difficulty. I've removed the clamp and also taken it off the hangers but it doesn't seem to want to slide off! It's a 3 piece, and I've also taken the centre section/down pipe clamp off to see if that helps.

When I lift the centre section up a little, I'm able to twist the bb but it doesn't want to slide off - I've tried hammering it off with no luck - any tips on how to get this fecker off?

Cheers

Gav

A s*it load of WD40 and a wiggling motion! You can try rotating it back and forth while trying to pull it off, or you can try twisting it from one side to the and up and down to loosen it. Either way a big rubber mallet and a mate to help pull it may be the best option.

if you can twist it on the center pipe then it will def come off, you just need to keep going at it. I hate exhausts, they are my least favourite part of cars to work on :P

Whoever did the camp up has probably crushed part of the joint so that the end of the inner pipe is now bigger than the narrowest part of the outer pipe (if that makes sense).

Keep twisting and pulling at the same time and it should eventually work it's way free.

Open the join up, use wd40, and if you can get some heat on it, and use the twatting stick to help and do the hokey pokey.

Cheers for replies. I'll have another go this w/e. Will put some wd40 on it and try to get it off. Worst case, I've still got that angle grinder from "the manifold job" that Anthony done....:P

If the advice above doesn't work. then put a piece of wood agains the rear of the backbox (so you don't dent/damage it), and bash seven-bells out of it with a lump hammer - that's about the only way I've removed some sleive fit exhausts before now.

The fact that it's twistable means that it should be easy enough - it's when they're rusted on solid that they're a real 'mare.

LMAO at "the manifold job" btw - nothing wrong with butchering an Mi manifold in two using a masonary grinding disk... :P

It's mainly down to keeping the two parts of the exhaust in line. There is so little clearance between the two diameters that when you wiggle it it's fighting with itself. Prop the back box up square to the middle section and tw@t it with a rubber mallet. It will come off. (Normally on your head). :P
