Engine Identification Number Plate

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to clear off this off my mind, the identification plate of the 1.9 lump, is that the only plate that carries the engine number and identification or is there any other number punched to some other side of the engine ?

Therefore is it that easy to just swap plates from a lump to another ?

There are two plates usually, one for the engine number & one for the engine code.

Both are located in the same place iirc on the 8v block next to the upper right hand engine mount.

Swapping plates might be possible by drilling the pop rivets that hold them on out but why would you want to?

I have a similar dilemma. I do not know how is the situation in UK (i guess engines are just like spare parts) but in my country (bg) it is not an easy task to change the engine of a car.

The car should be inspected and you should go and re-register the vehicle. The problem is, for example you have a 205 1.9 and make a Mi16 conversion, then you want to sell the engine to someone, well if this someone wants to be legal the original vehicle this engine has been mounted on should be discarded.

Thus changing the VIN plates looks like a good solution. However when you try to re-register the vehicle it is possible that the one who inspects the new engine notices the non-original pin and your car would stay there and you will have to go to court.

Stupid laws.

yes i know that it is not 'legal' to switch vin numbers but it's so hard to find a complete 1.9 engine in good condition with all relevant documents and stuff, especially here in Malta as it is not easy as the UK even to find the smallest part is difficult.

All i need to know if it is just those two plates if it's just them it's no problem, but i waa thinking there would be a number punched or something like that.

yes, the number is only on the plates. Me myself have a bigger problem, because i was running a TU1 engine, with number printed on a plate, and i purchased a 1.6 XU engine which has its number inprinted directly on the cylynder block :P

If you have autodata, in it you can check the location of the vin plates.

Switching them is the easiest solution, just if there is significant reason in the displacement of the engines or they are visually very different (Different types) be cautios and consult someone within your country who has done this. My biggest concern is the insurance companies. In case i hit something/someone, they may not be willing to pay me anything, as they would easily recognize that the engine is switched, although the number remains (this is only hypotetical situation, but I guess it could happen)
