Autobox Problems

Hi All.

 

As most of you should know I have been helping a mate (Phill) do a Mi16 conversion on his 205.

 

The engine is now in and all running, so we desided to take it for a quick spin, we got aprox 300 Yards down then road then the autobox started loseing drive, it got so bad that no matter what gear was selected the car would not go.

 

I don't know how autobox(es) work, but my understanding is that you need (x) ammount of oil pressure to select gears, ect.

 

If the oil in the autobox got to hot would this make the autobox lose drive, as when we stop and opened the bonnet I had a look at the oil filler for the autobox and there was steam / smoke coming out of it.

What is the fluid level like?

 

They rely on a fluid coupling between the engine and gearbox, so if you are low on fluid then you won't go anywhere quickly.

The autobox oil on the dipstip is on the max.

Also is there dif grades of Autobox oil, like engine oil, as my mate went into halfords and thay only had one type of autobox fuild in stock.

Different car manufacturers use different grades. I think ford use an odd grade that nobody else uses, but I think pug boxes use the standard stuff - whatever that is.

I'm pretty sure its dexron II you need in a 205 autobox

 

another thing to note is that the marks on the dipstick are for a hot engine, if you filled it to the max marker when cold then thats way too much oil I think.

Dexron type II automatic transmission fluid (Duckhams ATF Autotrans III)

I'll will phone up pug about what type of oil is needed in the autobox.

 

If it's not an oil issue what else could stop the autobox from driving?

Well we have drained all the oil out of the Gearbox, and replaced it with new stuff we have got from peugeot.

 

We can select all gear, forward and reverse, but only reverse will drive at all, forward feels like it's trying to drive, but no matter what RPM you give theres no go.

Have you checked the alignment of the selector lever? In the old style Haynes manual I think there are some measurements as to what position the lever on the box should be when drive, neutral etc are selected on the lever in the car.

newdean0: I don't think there is any problem with the alignment of the selector lever, and when you hold on the selector lock on the shifter you can feel when the gearbox moves to the next point, and all seem to be lined up fine.

 

inferno: It's fecking fast backwards. :P

 

One think I have been thinking, as I had to transport the gearbox from where the car is to my focks house to mod the gearbox housing for the cas sensor, is there any way that something has come lose or poped out inside the gearbox?

 

When the gearbox was remove from the car and was transported I keeped the Torque Converter locked into place.

 

Has anyone got a full exploded view of a autobox?

hehehe that engine was a good one mate... maybe it blew the box up?! :P ive got a xantia sports box if u could make it fit???!

as i said on the phone today, i have a 6month old box in a td bx. better off trying to find one in a scrappy though first or at least seeing if u can fit new belts to ur box?

 

hurry up and finish it i have another engine for sale and could use the good feedback on that engine :(
