Knocking From Xs Suspension

Recommended Posts

Jer309GTi

I've got a knocking coming from the suspension/steering on my XS.

I've jacked it up and checked everything but everything seems fine apart from a very slight bit of play in the n/s track rod end. I'm going to change this, but the problem is more than a bit of play in a track rod end.

Basically every time it goes over a bump you get the knocking noise, and you can feel it through the steering. It also has a tendancy to follow the camber of the road quite a lot (got 15's on it, but seems a bit severe to be down to wide tyres).

You also get a clunk when accelarating and when you back off. I'm pretty sure that it's engine mounts, and I have some new ones, but thought I'd mention it just in case.

I've checked both ball joints, theyre fine.

The rubber looked perished on the TCA bushes, so I changed them. Problem still there.

The o/s track rod end is fine, just that small amount of play in the n/s

The only things that I think it could be (that I havent checked) are the a/roll bar bushes that hold it to the subframe or worn strut top mounts. Would either of these cause the knocking?

The knocking noise sounds similar to when a drop link has gone on a GTi, but you can also feel it through the steering.

Any ideas please? -_-

You checked your subframe bolts are tight?

Subframe bolts were all tight, tightened them all a little more just to make sure (haven't got a torque wrench :D). A/roll bar bushes are definately knackered. Shall get some more and post up results of road test :P

Will do, cheers. It's done 120k so I'd imagine they would be pretty tired by now

Turns out the anti-roll bar bushes were worn, the n/s ball joint was worn and the n/s strut top mount bearings were shagged.
