Help Me! Headgasket Problems

Recommended Posts

Guest AlasdairCM

I know my head gasket has gone, bought a new one ages ago to replace it. Having trouble doing it though.

Firstly, I can't undo the bolts on the bar holding the inlet manifold in place. Secondly, can't undo the head bolts as they're too tight, borrowed a breaker bar from the garage down the road to hopefully do it, but I still can't manage it. Also I don't really know what exactly I'm doing in the replacement process.

Is there anyone in the Loughborough/Leicester area who can come and help me out? I would really appreciate any assistance, my car has been off the road for about 8 weeks now.

You could try asking 205 parts in Leicester about doing it but that won't be free.

A little more elbow grease may be needed. Have you got a Haynes joke book to help?

You could always leave it in Shelthorpe, they'll have it stripped down in no time! -_-

pics not the best but is the thread totally fooked? ie totally round

could always try a bit of heat and a few shocks with a hammer to take some of te stress out of it but not sure how successful that would be. If you've got a mate who could help you want them to press down on the torx bit on the end of the breaker to make sure it stays firmy seated in the bolt head whilst you turn the bar.

if all else fails you'll have to get the head of the bolt ground off (not sure how accessible with an angle grinder and a small cutting disc it would be) or use a drill to remove the bolt head

hth and good luck

Matt

isn't there a procedure to follow where you dont slacken them all off and leave 1 holding the fort, I read you had to slacken them then tighten them again in a certain order etc

see if there's anything of help here

You do have to slacken then re-tighten but this is only when your torqueing the head down - your supposed to run the car, wait an hour, then slacken and re- tighten each bolt in order.

When removing the bolts your supposed to do it in the opposite order of tightening, and we crack off all the bolts first, before unscrewing them completely.
