Jonmurgie 2 Posted May 3, 2006 Going to send it over to Matt @ QEP anyhow but as I've never seen a knackered crank I'd like some forum opinions: and this is the rod, assuming this is also buggered?! Thoughts?
veloce200 3 Posted May 3, 2006 Going to send it over to Matt @ QEP anyhow but as I've never seen a knackered crank I'd like some forum opinions: and this is the rod, assuming this is also buggered?! Thoughts? almost certainly the crank is salvageable with a regrind but unless the rod can be reclaimed and a larger bearing fitted that will be scrap as any new std bearing will spin again. ALEX 98 1 Cars Posted May 3, 2006 I doubt it. It looks pretty bad. I'd say the con rod is scrap too. Worth getting the crank checked though to be sure. Do it yourself if you can borrow some micrometers. If its out of round more than the maximum machining allowance. (maximum over sized bearings available) then the crank is scrap. Adam B 0 Posted May 3, 2006 Depends if the crank regrind is within the correct tolerances. You might need custom bearings on that cylinder to reduce the amount of float after the regrind. As it took some getting off i'd say the rod is mullered and probably ovalised.
Pug_101 0 Posted May 3, 2006 I would say yes with a crank regrind. nor sure about the Con rod though. It all depends if oversize bearing are available. How badly was the crank cooked as that will have an effect, doesn't look to bad in the picture.
Martin@PRD 0 Posted May 3, 2006 regrind the crank and bin the conrod and cap, Nice going bet you proud of that! i have now got a box of death for parts like this hmmmmm new thread idea.
M3Evo 0 Posted May 3, 2006 What are peoples views on Metspraying? (or whatever it's called when they build up an undersized crank pin so it can be ground down to size)
Kitch 4 Posted May 3, 2006 Mine was worse I'd say. The maximum recommended tolerance on them is 0.3mm, which is also the largest bearings commonly available as standard parts. The rod is scrap I reckon, source a new one. You've got to allow for balancing on the crank too.....the heat generated through the friction of the knackered bearing warped mine slightly
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted May 3, 2006 Crank might be OK, I can get bearings bigger than everone on here I think as I;ve done allot of research into this. Worth checking to see if it's bent too The rod is fit for scrap thou but at least there's loads of S/H rods kicking around.
petert 587 Posted May 4, 2006 (edited) It needs a grind, whether it will clean up at 0.3mm under is another matter. Get the rod closed and honed (if it's your last one!), and if the crank is fixable, get it crack tested and nitrided. Edited May 4, 2006 by petert
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted May 4, 2006 I'm sure I can goto .8 under size now, Quite handy as the cranks are getting rare
