Question About Changing A Clutch

Recommended Posts

iety2004

Been reading previous threads about clutches and have found out that i can use a diesel clutch plate on my h-reg 1.6 gti, need to buy one this week, as i can feel the biting point low on the pedal and the car does start moving until i nearly release the pedal.............so i got a knackered clutch....

but can i just change the plate, do i need to change the cover also? Do i have to use loc-tite when installing the clutch bolts?

cheers

Gareth

You don't HAVE to do the plate as well, though you will probably find that they all come as a 'kit' and include a release bearing and cover plate as well.

You don't HAVE to use locktight either, I didn't and it hadn't fallen off in over a year of very hard track driving! Though if you like, use a kocktite that you can UNDO again afterwards

Have you considered buying a new cable and adjusing it properly?

Where does your clutch pedal sit in realtion to your brake pedal when your not touching it?

Does the clutch slip when driving hard etc?

I have the same problem, the clutch is fine once your off the mark, accelerate as hard as you like in any gear and it doesn't slip.

But when pulling away in 1st gear there is no definete biting point, with about an inch of pedal travel between starting to move and the clutch bing fully engaged, which makes a smooth start quite difficult.

I changed the clutch for a brand new valeo one about a year ago and this didn't really help. afaik i'm still on the original cable though. So maybe its the cable that's the problem?

Well if it slips, then yeah new clutch.

But yeah if your taking it all apart, for the sake of £10-£15 i would replace it. Gives a lighter pedal, plus less chance of it leaving you stranded if the old one snaps.

Hi,

the 1.9 and 1.6 has essentially the same clutch. Mi16 is different though.

Depending on where your reverse is depends on the clutch release bearing you need.

Down and right is the BE3 gearbox.

Up and left (with lift collar) is the BE1 gearbox (earlier type).

Clutch cables vary with gearbox type and clutch pedal type.

The standard clutches are Valeo make and are available through other places cheaper than peugeot.

Have fun - its not too bad to do but make sure you check the gearbox bolts after a week as they can loosen.

Theres a how-to guide on the main site.

Ive changed the clutch on mine, its not a tricky job, just lengthy because of the amount of stuff you remove to give better access, also, clearance is a pain in the a$$ when dropping the gear box off, at least I found it was. A clutch is normally bought in a kit as Jonmurgie has said, so you will get all the parts you need, dont bother with peugeot as they are normally £££, just go to your local motorfactor, i got a Valeo one through there for a pretty good price. I wouldnt bother with locktite on the bolts personally, not worth it and just means extra hassle if you have to take it off again. I also changed my clutch cable, again not a tricky job, although I found the clutch is still not exactly easy and smooth, but I have a old style be1 box so put it down to that  Rad

I have a phase 2 gti, so its a be3, i bought a clutch off ebay, a complete kit for £16.

Im a Motor vehicle technician by trade so changing it wont be a problem (I Hope)

I'll look into getting a cable also for a be3 box,

i'll let you know how i got

Its not too bad to do. Make sure you get a long cable rather than the short version and have a quick look at the clutch pedal before you buy to give you an idea what the pedal end should look like - can be a confusing world in clutch-cable-land

Well the pin style cable end is be1 and the white rectangle is be3.

Its not a bad job, just messing about bashing nuckles picking up heavy gear boxes.

Been looking through a snap on deals leaflet and realise there is an engine hoist for sale 29 quid, so i'll be having one of them to helf me, hate suporting the engine from underneith.

hopefully, when the thing turns up, i'l change the clutch this week end, i alsi need to change the drive shaft seals as they are leaking

Well the engine will be supported from the back and the drivers wing. I'd support the engine if you're worried about it, but use the hoist on the gearbox which is blinking heavy and a bit awkward on the subframe.

It will then be easier to align to shove back on to the engine if you can hoist it to the right height.

Have fun anyway - its not too bad really especially with a guide! :D
