Removing Engine Loom?

Do you need to take the clocks out to remove the ECU loom?

 

I've taken the ECU out and unplugged everything, but the loom disappears up into the dash on either side of the steering column. I've taken the column out, but still can't see an easy way to get the loom out.

Yes you need to take the whole of the top half of the dash off to get to the plastic clip that holds the loom in place under neath.

 

To get the top section off you need to undo the 10mm nuts under the plastic grill under the bonnet where the wiper motor is.

 

Its quite a big job to get it all out properly without damaging anything.

Not sure what you're doing with the loom but when I removed my 8v loom I couldn't get the ECU plug past the steering column so ended up just cutting it off! (was putting an Mi16 loom in).

I'm finally fitting the Mi16 thats been in the garage for the last year.

 

I'd rather not cut the plug off in case the engine explodes (it's the first engine I've rebuilt) and I have to go back to the 8v for a while.

You can undo the wires into the ECU connector to get the loom out and if you mae a note of which wire went where (photos maybe easier) you could always put it back together again if needed.

Thats true. I had to replace some of the terminals on the mi16 loom as they'd been damaged. I know it comes apart quite easily.

unless weight is a consideration, why not leave the ecu in place, plugged in and pull the loom back through the bulkhead grommet, tie with cable ties etc and hide it all behind the console? should the mi explode the re fit of the 8v would be a lot more simple.

I've managed to get it out without taking the dash out. If you take the steering column out, and remove the clocks (mainly to get the speedo cable out of the way) then you can just about reach to pull the loom down.

Would't have thought too huge with the corrugated sleeving removed, should have seen the pile of FOUR knackered immobilisers, motion sensor and assosciated wiring that was living in behind the console when i re-loomed the cti. It wouldn't fit in the box I carried the loom in when removed..........
