did the phase two 1.9 have a different gear nob to the phase two 1.6?

what i mean is the facia where it says the gears etc,

i no the pahse one had a r near the first, i just mean the look.

i have a 1.6 one i think which as the gear numbers indented in the plastic oval with teh reverse behind 5th, and i have another one, which inst indented, it has a plastic glass over it with the gear underneath it.

im just wanting to change the oval part only!!!

thank

The 1.6 GTi gear knobs were indented with the patterns as you say you have and the 1.9 gear knobs had the plastic on the top.

I'd say your easiest just changing the complete gear knob. although it may seem stiff just tug at it, it will come off, but watch you face!!

while on this topic, I would like to ask - is the gear lever different on GTI models?

I'm asking, because I'm in the process of switching my TU 1.1 engine with a XU 1.6 engine, and after I changed the gearbox and the respective levers (as well as the subframe) my gear lever went pretty forward and switching the gears is really awkward...i'm pretty sure that it is not the gear lever but it could be (after all I'm able to switch all the gears..)

As said above 1.9 has no indents on the lever. To remove twist 90 degrees and pull.
