Engine Rocking Quite Bad, Mount Gone?

Recommended Posts

GTI_Lee

hi basically can i ask where all the mounts are situated on a 205 GTI, i see one and i guess there is another under the battery tray??.

because basically i have a set of twin 40's on it, also a 270 piper cam. but when the car is idling the engine is rocking quite bad and making noise, is it common or not???

thanks for any help.

lee

PS: im a newbie

There is one under the battery as you say. If you take the battery out you can see it through the top of the battery tray.

There is also one low down on the back of the engine. In the bracket that also supports the driveshaft. If the engine is rocking back and forth then it's probably this lower mount that's at fault. A new mount isn't too expensive, or you could fit a stiffer mount (available from a few places) and reduce the amount of engine movement considerably.

ok thanks i will go and have a look now,

so say a mount has gone what exactly am i looking for?? it snaped and the rubbers missing / rotted??

PS: where could i get a stiffer set from, because obviously witha the carbs and cam the engine will be forced to rock so these would be a great idea??

thanks lee

The lower mount is a cilindrical shaped rubber mount with a central metal bush for the mounting screw.

The rubber may be perished, and there are 'cutouts' on the rubber, which may have torn etc.

Its right below the long driveshaft as stated before, where the driveshaft runs through the same casting.

You can get grp N/A ones from Peugeot sport, Skip Brown Cars, Baker bushings, autofive etc, sometimes they come up on ebay too, but be careful as these may be more than Peugeot sport charge.....

Hope this helps

you need to get right under the car with it jacked up, its right at the bottom of the back of the engine, you can't miss it as the O/S driveshaft goes right through it.

ok well its abit dark / cold now so i will look 2morrow.

basically i am looking to see if the rubber has perished yea??

i just started it then and you can feel the whole car shaking , also the gear lever shaking whilst putting it into gear so i am pretty sure a mount has gone.

with a bottom mount nackered you'd be able to rock the engine back and forth from the top. For example when it's disconnected you can move the engine a good 10 degrees. Just have a good look when your down there moving the engine from the bottom (assuming the axle stands are not holding the engine up)

so you mean, that when engine is turned off, if i grip the rocker cover and shake back and forth the engine should rock???

well i tried that before and it doesnt rock much when applying alot pressure.

yes giving it a thorough rock at the location of the 2 side mounts and say from the sump at the bottom should give an indication if any of them are fooked. Visual inspection is also worth a try. If you have issues in this area and as you are on the original OE mounts anyway, just upgrading to all Group N from say Bakers (great prices and service)would be a wise move as you have more power.

In the spirit of 205 ownership and the forum you can do most of that yourself (even the mounts) with a haynes manual, searching posts on here and asking for help. The carbs setup and rolling road session is the only thing i'd like to see you spend your money on in that list.

Now move it :)
