saml666 0 Posted May 1, 2006 I've caught up with the idea that removing the ram from a PAS rack and blocking the connections makes for a quick rack of sorts... Any major reasons not to do it? I don't want a manual rack as its too many turns lock to lock and am too tight to pay for a "real" quick rack. Also my PAS pump is leaky and old and the whol ebay looks cleaner without it. Do you just fit a shorter non PAS belt afterwards? Sam
Banjo 1 Posted May 1, 2006 (edited) You will need the alt bracket from a non pas car with the matching belt, and yes just remove the ram and block the holes up. I did this by cutting the metal pipes and flattening the ends down but lots of people use silicon I believe. Ben Edited May 1, 2006 by Banjo

gti_al 1 Posted May 1, 2006 So if I have a nonPAS car, can I just fit a PAS rack?(sans ram?) Yep. I'm trying to find tighten things up a bit. They are shocking standard... Although i've been warned about things getting (even) heavier. I think that is why the ram has to come out though. And i think graham did it, but then went with full PAS. j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted May 1, 2006 I run this setup and have no problems, i blocked the holes with chemical metal.
Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted May 1, 2006 I blocked the holes with shortened bolts with the right thread.
saml666 0 Posted May 1, 2006 Cheers all, thats easy enough then - PM me if you have a non-PAS alt bracket though eh, I need one now Many thanks, Sam

Seriously , I think heaviness isn't an issue on dirt, and I'd really like a quicker rack... Doesn't disconnecting the ram just give more(better) feel? At the risk of too much feel? petert 587 Posted May 2, 2006 are they're different ratio PAS racks? Or are they all the same?
pug_life 0 Posted May 2, 2006 i found the 309 PAS rack has a larger connection to the steering column pinion part than the 205 non PAS rack... (that prob makes no sense ) so had to swap back to stock 205 rack for time being...
Banjo 1 Posted May 2, 2006 Yeah the universal joint is different on the pas cars.

(that prob makes no sense ) so had to swap back to stock 205 rack for time being... I thought it was age related with what type the pinion was. I have a H plate 309, and had to source another rack off a '90 car but the pinion was different. If you search the 205 and 309 racks are the same, but the track rods are different length. Anthony 1,003 Posted May 2, 2006 I was under the impression that the early and late manual racks were different, but all the PAS racks were the same (but different again to the manual racks)?
