Buying Gti6 Engine

Recommended Posts

DaveK

my mate knackered his gti6 engine the other week and he has replaced it with another one. I was considering buying his other one and here is the problem that happened with it :

basically he was giving it some loving and is started making nasty rattling noises and it was cuttign out unless he kept the revs above 1k. he managed to drive it 7 or 8 miles back home but by the morning it had dumped all its oil on the driveway. im gonna have a look at it on friday but not entirely sure what to look for

my intentions are to rebuild it

any1 got any ideas?

cheers folks

dave

Sounds like bottom end is fooked... unless there is a big hole in the side of the block then you'd have to drop the sump off to check the condition of the bottom end before buying...

Drain the oil and take off the sump. If it looks like Jon's halfway down this thread (

http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=58438 ) i.e. full of debris, then it's a big end bearing. You could remove a bearing cap and check the condition of each one, if the bottom end is knocking/rattling then it is likely a bearing has failed.

However, the only real way of telling if anything is salvageable is having the crank checked by a professional so ensure it hasn't become ovalled. I'm a novice myself so i'm sure the guys on here will be able to give you some more comprehensive information! :)

Have a look at this thread: Removing Mi16

The bottom end has gone on this engine there are pics in the thread on page 2 which is almost certain to be the problem with your mates car. ;)

The fact there is oil on the drive indicates the block/sump has been damaged and it normally takes a snapped conrod to do this as it punches it way through the block. If so the engine will have at least one totally fcuked cylinder bore and possiblly damaged head.

If you are still interested the best course of action would be to look for damage to the block/sump (if there is any walk away at this point) then if the block/sump is ok drain what is left of the oil into a container an inspect it for debris. If you find tin like metal showing signs of heat and very thin it will be the bearing liners as in the link above (engine may be rebuildable), but if you find chunks of steel/Aluminium somrthing has broken in a big way. To work out if the engine is rebuildable you will have to look further by taking the sump off & maybe the head as well.

If its bearing the engine may be rebuildable if its anything else probably unrepairable and the head is also likely to have suffered damage.

Of course if it hadn't been driven 8 miles in this state it would have been a lot better. :)
