Anton green 12 1 Cars Posted April 30, 2006 Just cleaned up my brown multiplug over the gearbox (you know the one), and now the starter motor wont kick in. Seems like too much of a coincidence not to be related. Can some one tell me how to get my car to start again plez!
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted April 30, 2006 Check the thick blue wire that goes to the multiplug this is the starter wire, probably come loose.

Guest chris1993GTI Posted May 1, 2006 Just cut the crappy plug off and through crimp the wires instead, proper job. Totally agree! Gunna do this in the morning with mine. Spent all of today replaceing the full front suspension. Had an hour or 2 left of daylight and thought I'd clean said connector to sort my irratic oil guage......Bugger all works now Off it comes first thing
Anton green 12 1 Cars Posted May 1, 2006 (edited) I had a fiddle around with the multiplug today and particularly the blue wires, and the starter began working again. Taking the 'if it aint broke dont fix it' approach I left everything as it was.. I cleaned out the multiplug to get my oil pressure guage working again, but no, it still doesnt move. -Any ideas? (when it stopped working it fluttered up and down a few times before resting at 0 where the needle has stayed ever since, if that helps anybody?) The only thing cleaning it has acheived is that my dashboard now lights up a lot brighter with the red 'stop' and handbrake warning lights.. davemar 16 Posted May 4, 2006 I found the wire from the ignition key to the brown connector is pretty flakey and can stop the car from starting. I got round this by installing a relay which this wire drives (a relay requires far less current the a starter solenoid), and getting it to switch a heavier duty wire from the battery to the solenoid. I've never had a starting problem since. The brown connector isn't always the cause of the problem when it comes to the starter, as I still suffered from the problem without any brown connector fitted! The solution above solved the problem. Banjo 1 Posted May 4, 2006 Yes the solenoid wire quite often burns out, i've replaced mine with uprated cable, no probs since. Ben
Anton green 12 1 Cars Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Yes the solenoid wire quite often burns out. Can you remember which colour wire this is so that I can check on the condition of it in my pug? Thanks Edited May 5, 2006 by Anton green
jackherer 543 Posted May 5, 2006 Can you remember which colour wire this is so that I can check on the condition of it in my pug? Thanks its usually blue and slightly thicker than most of the other wires in the brown multiplug.
