Got Bad Noise From Pass Side Front Wheel...

Recommended Posts

yorkshirekowboy

hi,

my cars up for its mot this week hopefully if i can get to sort out this problem.

what it is when i acelarate the left front wheel makes a grinding noise but when i take the revs off (deaclerate), the noise goes away. and so on ....

when i turn a corner on the left, (the side with bad noise) the noise gets worse. but when i turn the other way and turn the wheel right, the noise dissapears, its strange as it does it only when i put my foot down, or put the wieght on that wheel when turning the corner.

Im thinking it could be the drive shaft as it makes noise when acelarating, but then when i turbn on that wheel the noise gets bad, suggesting wheel bearing?

I have check for play and nothing, and turned wheel really fast and i cant hear any cluncking noise or sounds of a bad wheel bearing?

any ideas?

thanks

if it's not the wheel bearing, is it not most likely to be CV joint?

take it out into a carpark and drive it slowly on lock in either direction - you'll hear a clicking if the CV's shot

time for a new one then i guess :D

if you're on a budget, you could try getting a scrappy CV (make sure it's not shot too though), as you can't buy 'new' (reconditioned) CV joints - only the complete shafts

recon shafts are only about £50 though

i'd get it done fairly soon too, as they're potentially dangerous in that kind of condition - they can break up and seize which can cause no end of 'bother' if you're driving at the time! i had the circlip which holds them on snap and make its way into the joint once - it was quite exciting :excl:
