Guest smokinslim Posted April 30, 2006 How stiff would rear shocks have to be too stiff for my car? Reason i ask is that i have in my possesion a pair of practically brand new 206 xsi 16v rear shocks. I've measured them up and with a little trimming of the lower mountings they could be made to fit, but they're a fair amount stiffer than 205 gti shocks. Will i end up calling my car skippy again if i fit them or will they just allow me to carry more weight in the back without the tyres rubbing. I would strap them on and find out if they were a straight fit, but as they're not i don't want to be left with something that can't be sold on if i don't use them. If i tried them and they did turn out to be far too stiff they would probably only be useful for a 205 tarmac rally car or similar. Has anyone tried this already or got any ideas on this? It's quite possible that they will be far too stiff but i'd like to explore the possibility before i dismiss it. If it helps the barcode label (from new) has the no 0238 on it. Anthony 1,003 Posted May 1, 2006 I can't see that 206 XSi shocks are going to be excessively stiff and will cause the rear to become skittish, no.
Guest smokinslim Posted May 1, 2006 They're not immovable, just by hand they take a great deal more force to compress/expand than 205 ones. Presumably this is because (i assume) 206s are heavier. Also they're about 15mm longer but that shouldn't matter whilst the backs at a sensible height. I'm dying to try them, but don't want to be stuck with something that's no good to anyone. Is there anyway of finding out the damping rate of specific dampers? I wouldn't be surprised if my local dealership don't have a clue...
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted May 2, 2006 You're right the local dealership will have no clue, but that kind of information very difficult to get hold of. I would say that these might be a good upgrade for standard shocks as they won't be overly stiff, but they will be stiffer, being designed for a heavier car. The only concern is the shock length, 15mm doesn't sound like a great deal but with the ratio of the rear 205 supension, the shock doesn't move much relative to the rideheight (ie 15mm might actually be a lot extra as far as the shock length is concerned)
Guest smokinslim Posted May 3, 2006 Correct, local pugshop = clueless. The best i got out of them was the weight of the 206. Having been for a good blast last night my current setup's probably plenty stiff enough for the neglected coutry roads i favour round here anyway. Going any stiffer would probaly result in either aore arse or an even sorer back end. Thanx for the help wit this anyway guys. Anyone want a pair of 206 rear dampers (un-altered)?
