Guest Tidybri Posted April 30, 2006 hi im new to the board i got my 87 d reg 1.6 gti last week and it seems to have very sloppy gears. im told this is a common problem and is easily fixed by changing the linkage and or rods. how i do this i dont know so im hoping this is where you guys will come in handy any help is apreciated BRIAN
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 30, 2006 The rods to the gear linkage under the car do get sloppy with age & there are plastic bushes on the quadrant that also wear & the bolt for the other subframe quadrant can come loose making things really bad. Best solution is to check everything is tight on the subframe & get some new linkages. Miles on here sells a set of uprated gear rods for a good price here. Graham. Guest Tidybri Posted April 30, 2006 thanks pugtorque is this quite an easy job for someone with no experience? have sourced the part from a srap yard for £10 is it model specific?
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 30, 2006 What part have you sourced from the scrapyard? Its easy to swap these over but you need the front of the car raised (ramps or axle stands) so you can get underneath to the subframe. AFAIK everything is model specific to the engine & gearbox. Guest Tidybri Posted May 2, 2006 Not sure really just kmow they are breaking a 205 said i can go take the bits off and have them for a tenner. got the tools for the job at least!!! will try and find out wot model it is today nothings gonna happen till next month now anyway its already bled me dry this month. so its sorn untill then gotta fix the light for the dials 2!!! Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted May 3, 2006 it's specific to the GTi, so getting them from a basemodel won't do. furthermore the ones from the scrappy will probably just as sloppy as the ones you got already. GSF does a full new set for a reasonable price and then the problem is solved for sure.
Guest Tidybri Posted May 3, 2006 sorry i may sound stupid but GSF? where do i get hold of them? Is it worth fitting a quick shift?
roland rat 11 Posted May 3, 2006 GSF=german, swedish and french.yeah i would recommend fittnig new rods and a quickshift.transformed the way my gti drove.
collateral 0 Posted May 3, 2006 I used to have it on the list of things to do, but apparently quickshifts can be a mixed blessing as they stress the trannie.

pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted May 4, 2006 GSF. Yes, you can upgrade just the rods, see the link in my first reply for someone who sells them. Graham.
