Finally after god knows how many months, i've taken the engine out of the car because of the spun bearing. Stripping the engine to see whats what, its clear to see which one had spun, but the crank in unmarked, so is the inside of the bearing. The outside of the bearing is badly scored and the rod also.

Is this normal, i was expecting the crank to be damaged aswell, i must admit i haven't measured the journels yet (as always i've lent my tools to someone and they have never returned).

Have i been lucky, or am i simply not looking carefully enough? :(

If you've spun a bearing the crank needs professionally checking for both oval journals & to see if its been bent.

Just because it looks OK can make it an expensive rebuild if you fit it all back together & it isn't.

The cranks are pretty tough so the damage might not be visable.

Graham.

I did think there was more to it, judging by the noise it made the last time it was running!

Locating a working GTI engine is neither difficult or expensive, so i might go that route, rather then playing around with something that sounds, and most probably is......dead.
