eddie_1.9 1 Posted April 27, 2006 (edited) I was wondering what the symptoms are? is it noise, lack of pressure, total loss of pumping abilities, something else? and when do the symptons usually occure, i.e. when cold, hot, prolonged high revs, low revs? It must have a pretty easy life being totally coated in oil all the time. I can't really see how one can fail other than the chain coming off, and then all it would need to fix it would be a new chain. Do they fail very often? Anthony 1,003 Posted April 27, 2006 Depends how it fails - obviously it could suffer a catastrophic failure and snap/shear something, but that's almost unheard of. Chain could theoretically snap, but I've never heard of that happening, and no way that it's going to fall off. Most common issues are the crank pulley bolt coming loose which in turn means the oil pump looses drive (as it relies on friction) and thus oil pressure, or high mileage and/or sucking up debris can wear the gears inside and result in low oil pressure. Only other things I've heard of is the pickup getting damaged from the sump taking a hit, and the oil pump pressure relief spring/valve sticking
eddie_1.9 1 Posted April 27, 2006 Thanks for replying anthony I was wondering as i still have my strange noise at low revs when the engine is up to temperature despite both new cambelt tensioners & water pump when i did the cambelt and it's still there if i run it with the aux belt off. Still haven't had time to take the sump off and take a look at the pump yet so was looking for some clues what i should be looking for. Hopefully it is the pump causing it and it will be something obvious.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted April 27, 2006 The pumps are very good and I;ve never known one to fail, The spur gears have never given me any problems over the 18 years I;ve known them. If you do fancy a new one, Get a GTi6 one with the drive wheel as these are modded to take a keyed drive from the crank
eddie_1.9 1 Posted April 28, 2006 You see thats what make me scratch my head. I've never had an oil pump fail on me, or known of one to. So if they never go why are they so readily available from motor factors? I can't imagine the market is entirely created to cater for the small number of people who hit stuff with their sumps and take out the oil pump too.

Ever since I had my new engine running there has been an odd noise from the cam belt area, despite it being all new. Got to do something about it soon but it is certainly coming from the cam belt as I've had the aux belt off. Oh and I also have a brand new oil pump fitted... Miles 331 1 Cars Posted April 28, 2006 I think the thought of using a old pump for some people isn;t heard of, And who with a bogo std engine is going to replace one but the XU engine is sold in large numbers so maybe why the amount of pumps kicking around. Even in my Dad's car of 1938 it runs the OE pump which is basicly the same design
petert 601 Posted April 28, 2006 If the pump is in good condition there's no need to replace it. Inspect the gears for wear, chips out of the gears, end clearance etc. Also check the piston for wear, pick up marks etc. If all is ok, put it back together. I've had my fingers crossed that my noise can only be the oil pump cos if its not then i'm all out of ideas. It been suggested it might be the cam cover rubbing but it not that sort of noise and plus i can find any evidence of it (marks). It's got to be something Mi specific. Is there anything else that has a bearing?? afaik everything else in the bottom end is a shell bearing?
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted May 2, 2006 Well have been looking at it this weekend and seems likely that it is a duff tensioner in my case. Sound is certainly coming from that location and sounds like a duff bearing.
Banjo 1 Posted May 2, 2006 (edited) On my xu10 that i've just built there is an odd noise, sounds just like thrust bearing but that is new, when I put the engine togther the oil pump chain was not very tight, could it be that making the noise on mine and maybe yours? eddie_1.9 1 Posted May 2, 2006 Thats what mine sounds a bit like, thats why i have now turned my attention to the oil pump. I think there is also a wind deflector plate thing that sits above the sump that i think may also be contributing if its come loose (if i have one at all) I've tried 3 different cam tensioners & 2 cam rollers so i know they're definatly ok. Maybe the new water pump is duff. Hopefully i will actually get a chance to get my sump off and take a look in there in the next couple o days. If there's still no joy then the water pumps getting changed again
