Ebc Yellows

I have just changed discs and pads all round. After chatting to our old friend Richyboy (GtiMad) I went for standard brembo discs and ebc pads. Green rear, yellows front.

 

I have used EBC pads before and have had mixed results, but I think that was down to QC issues which appear to be getting better.

 

However despite Richy reckoning they are fine I was concerned about using EBC's "race only" pad on the road.

 

Anyway to cut a ling story short, yellows do work from cold, despite the warnings on the box. I have trackday in May, but I expect no problems. It was having no brakes when cold that I was concerned about.

 

Rich reckons the yellows perform similar to reds, but you get much better life out of the them.

I found yellowstuff to be really good too, although as always EBC seem to be inconsistent with quality as my second set weren't that great BUT the first set I had I'd say were comparable to a set of DS3000s - they were that good. Pad life wasn't spectacular though (bizarrely of every pad I've used I found my first set of Greenstuff pads lasted the longest).

 

Try searching for yellowstuff, might bring up some old threads I posted in.

Exactly why I neither buy them again, or recommend them....Seem to do their testing on their customers....

I wouldn't buy there discs. I had one pad shed its material round goodwood, but out of about 4 sets of greens thats about all.

 

I remember you posting before C_W, but I thought thats was for reds.

I've never tried redstuff pads. The yellows I got cheap, maybe from the same source?? :o and £ for £ are the best pad I've tried.

 

Kev, not sure why but my current set of DS3000s on the 205 gave me horrendous brake judder at cadwell then again at oulton (had the discs skimmed in between and bedded them n a bit on the road). Never had any of these problems with the first set and nothing else has changed. Visible chunks of the pad had stuck to the disc after oulton, but when I sanded them off by hand they went smooth again. Strangely my BMW with DS2500s has done exactly the same thing - really bad judder - maybe its how I drive!? :)

What discs are you using? Did the discs warp that you needed to skim them? Wouldn't account for the chunks of material though.

 

I just have poor experiences with EBC (used Green + Red (removed after 1 track day @ Knockhill after going on fire....))....Mintex/Ferodo are MUCH more consistant IMO.

 

I remember when I first talked about using DS3000's - Everyone said that they were un-necessary for a 205....

Generally my experience of DS3000s is good, they are good from cold and awesome when warmed up, just that I've been having deposit problems leading to major judder lately, it maybe that they haven't bedded in properly or something.

 

The discs are plain discs for a 307 (283x26mm) and have been using these for about 2 or 3 years now I think. As I say nothing's changed from one set to the next, the only thing that has I suppose is that I don't use the car so much on the road now.

 

I had them skimmed lightly just to clean them up but when they went juddery again after the next trackday I just took the discs off and sanded off the chunks of pad that had bonded to the disc. When I did this they were smooth again, so the discs aren't warping.

60k miles out of my last pair of front Greenstuff's!

 

haven't checked wear on the current set for a while though ...

I can believe 60k if that was just road driving as I had a set of "good" greenstuff pads last me a year including about 10 trackdays, nowadays the pads I use last less than half that time.

Chris if your speed at Cadwell is anything to go by I'm not surprised your brakes aren't keeping up ! Try some caliper and disc paint and some additional brake ducts and then also try perhaps rebuilding the calipers (maybe they don't release properly) and a more strict bed in procedure - tricky if you are not using on the road much.

Prolonged lack of use is bad news for brakes, same as everything else really. We checked over a customers brakes a month ago (his car had been sitting since whatever his last trackday was in 2005) to get it all ready for this trackday season, and the pads were royally f***ed.

 

Nearly brand new DS3000s, only 2 or 3 trackdays old and you could pick chunks off with your fingers :blink:

:D That's unforgiveable in my book, I'd never go near a product of theirs again! Lmao at "about all" hehe :D

My old greenstuff pads never wore down either!

 

Fair enough they gave very little feel when compared back to back with Mintex and also were very inconsistant.

 

Happy they were on the car when I bought it as I wouldn't pay good money for them. Mintex 1144's are far better as a road/occassional track pad and the Mintex 1155's absolutely blow them away - but then the EBC range is aimed at the "tuner" end of the market

I used to use greenstuff pads on 1.6 calipers, with a spacing kit and 283mm disks and never suffered brake fade, they wore out quickly but then at £23 a set I dont find that an issue. I got through around 6/7 sets with this setup and the same disks.

 

Now ive fitted gti-6 calipers. Ive only got experience of one set of mintex 1144 pads that ive been told are the eqivelant of greenstuff's and they can not cope with the same driving style the greenstuffs coped with. Ive faded the brakes at cadwell park, oulton park and again yesterday at anglesey :( AND they haven't lasted any longer than the greenstuffs would. Im about to run onto the backing material in the next few hundred road miles ;)

 

Im going to go against the tide here and replace the mintex pads with an ebc flavour, just unsure what colour yet.
