Gearbox Change, And Some Confusion !

Recommended Posts

Jez G

Sorry if this is a daft question, but I am a little confused !

My gearbox reciently started making nasty noises and jumping out of gear, I happened to have a spare box lying around (as you do !) so swapped them over.

Now for the confusion, my car is a 1987 phase 1, on E plate, the box came from a much later car K plate I think. After lots of looking aroung this site I was expecting reverse to move from the left of 1st to under 5th. Also I was expecting to have to change the clutch cable on the gearbox end. Now the replacement box is in and working, reverse is where is alway was, and the clutch cable is fine !

Have I swapped a Be1 box for another one and not a Be3 ?

The casting was quite different, extra ribs anf stuff like that, also the new box had a filler plug on the top under the battery, the old box had a filler / level plug on the side ? but all was interchangable.

Is it the gear linkage that sets the position of reverse or the internals of the box ?

Is the later clutch cable interchanable with the early boxes so no change was required ?

Thanks

Jez

If reverse is still next to first then you have the same box (Be1) fitted imo. What car did this gearbox come from as it sounds to be an older & different box that you had fitted previously.

The changes between Be1 & Be3 are all internal afaik, the gear linkage is pretty much identical for each one.

Graham.

Thanks Graham

The box was out of a 205, 1.9 GTI that was being broken by a friend I saw the car it came from it was definately a phase 2.

I was not to happy with puting the 'wrong' box in the car in the first place, as I was trying to put the thing back to something like orginal.

Are there several types of Be1 box around ?

Sounds like a BE1 Mi16 box with the extra rib's on it, Don;t forget that the boxes get swaped over on allot of car's so I doubt it's the orginal one.

What type of clutch arm has it got?

The beige seal on top is the dustcover...i wouldnt pour oil in there unless you want it ending up in the bellhousing :D

If it has a black plug with a hole on it then it's a be1 box as that's where the lift up revers goes

as miles says it sounds like you've got yourself a be1 mi16 box

Miles,

I had to use the clutch arm of the my original box, but it fitted fine.

huxley309,

The filler pug is like the one on the sump, complete with copper washer !, There was a picture of it in the Haynes manual !, anyway 2l of oil went in and none came out .... :)

One last question then, are all the ratio's the same in the mi16 box ?

I have only driven it for about 200m to make sure all is working ok.

Thanks for your help

Jez
