pip470 61 Posted April 23, 2006 Can any one help with my mi16, i bought it of ebay as a fully rebuilt standard engine, the guy had told me that its had new seals throughout and the crank and pistons had all been checked by a quallified mechanic. He sent me the video below and told me the oil pressure on the gauge reads low, he also told me he took the rocker cover and could see oil flowing to the common spray rail. I have changed the oil pump but think i am being a bit naive, I have yet to fit the engine to hear it run. Any help would be great. Just to describe the noise it is very tappy and i think almost definately top end tappets starved of oil. Could it just need priming? He never drove the car or had the engine running for long when it sounded like that. P.S this is my first post since the newby lounge so i hope it's right. Cheers, phill engine noise video
Jonmurgie 2 Posted April 23, 2006 Welcome to the forum Well it 'sounds' like you have a blowing manifold to me... so that's a video of the engine you've bought fitted in the sellers car?
pip470 61 Posted April 23, 2006 Welcome to the forum Well it 'sounds' like you have a blowing manifold to me... so that's a video of the engine you've bought fitted in the sellers car? Yes mate, i asked for it before i would buy it, I paid £325 which sounded like a bargain after the write up on ebay: Reluctantly up for auction have a fully rebuilt Mi16 engine, alloy block full power 1900 16v,not the 2.0 sluggish iron block!! its come from my unfinished project which i had to abandon due to buying a house etc..its had everything done from bottom to top,i.e. piston rings, rods resized, crank checked, brand new bearings and oil seals throughout,etc...it comes complete with newly painted silver inlet manifold and all ancillaries, air flow meter, starter, alternator etc...its literally been run very little, the car hasnt been on the road since the engine was put in due to the power steering not yet being plumbed in yet and therefore no mot! i am selling this engine and then putting a 1.9 back in my car to sell that to hopefully get back some of the hundreds ive spent! just the peugeot original gasket set came to £150!! then theres the piston rings £80,crank and rods being sorted £100,engine bearings £120 plus all the other stuff (cam belt, dizzy cap, rotor arm......im gonna cry!!)it soon adds up!! the engine starts on the button but i will mention that in the few times ive run it ive noticed that the oil pressure is reading rather low,but im sure this is just a small problem as i checked the oil rail in the head and there is a constant flow of oil getting to the head so it could be just the pump needs priming again or it needs to run for a bit to pump fully round the system to build up pressure, anyway,i'll leave that up to you,i'm just being honest,if anyone would like to hear it run its still in my car What do you think was or is it still a bargain. I don't think its the manifold blowing, If it was a diesel i would say it runs sweet! Cheers
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted April 23, 2006 If its a fresh engine and been rebuilt then tappets do take time to fill up with oil but should go away after a few miles.
pip470 61 Posted April 23, 2006 If its a fresh engine and been rebuilt then tappets do take time to fill up with oil but should go away after a few miles. Just don't want to do any long term damage. It seems to much of a coincidence that the oil pressures low. I've heard that if the main bearing shells were'nt the right size then there would also be low oil pressure hence the tappets not filling up. Is it just me or do you ever find your self thinking about these things way too long when the answers really simple. I often make it way more coplicated than it actually is. Thanks for your reply. Does any one else think i should just run it for a while or should it be within the first 10-20 seconds to fill up?
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted April 23, 2006 Make sure the oil is at the right level first, then crank the engine over with the injectors and king lead disconnected to let the oil get round the engine and make sure its primed, wait for the oil light to go out. Then start it up, listen for any initial rattles which could indicate bottom end and let it run, but if its a new engine you ideally want to drive it to help bed the rings in etc, best not to let it idle too long as it will glaze the bores. The top end will tap as it does take time for the oil to build up in the tappets.
