Batfink 201 Posted April 23, 2006 Are steel cranks worth having on a pure trackday mi16 engine? What should I pay for one? i've been offered one and am unsure as to whether its a good idea to buy Well - actually i think it'd be great for reliability but are they really that much stronger Its steel, not billet steel (whats the difference!) DrSeuss 0 Posted April 23, 2006 are you running forged rods and pistons? And a full solid lifter head? And a dry sump? If the answer is yes, its the last link in the chain to making stupid revs possible.
Batfink 201 Posted April 23, 2006 er well i got a dry sump so far
niklas 1 Posted April 23, 2006 How much is the crank gonna cost you? If you're aiming for big power and high revs sometimes in the future it seems reasonable. If you're looking at revving a maximum of 8k then maybe not...
M3Evo 0 Posted April 23, 2006 Thought they were forged steel anyway?
petert 586 Posted April 23, 2006 You should at least get the standard crank crack tested and nitrided if you're going to race it.
B1ack_Mi16 67 Posted April 23, 2006 Thought they were forged steel anyway? Most of the cranks are cast iron. At least all the ones I've seen. Only the XU10J4TE and XU11D seem to have forged ones. The forged ones only have 4 counterweights, while the cast ones seem to at least have 8 ones in the 16v engines.
