Difference Between 106gti And 205 Rear Beams

Recommended Posts

TT205

Was talking to a chap with a 106GTI with fabulous handling and he was saying it's probably the differences in the rear beam/suspension set up as standard between the two cars (106 n 205) that make's the 106 handle so well, he went on to describe what I thought was 'extra bracing' which put a picture in my mind of the 206 beam set up. However having looked at a 106GTI beam off a car I don't see any extra bracing, in fact I don't see a great deal of difference full stop

Can someone please enlighten me

Cheers

Dave

You are right, there isn't any! The beam tube is also the bearing shafts on a 106 though, rather than having shafts that press into the trailing arm and slide inside the beam like on a 205/309. On the 106 the bearings are pressed into the trailing arms and slid over the beam.

Some European company are making 206-type stabilising suspension for the back and fairly trick stuff for the front aswell, there's a thread on here somwhere with everyone wanking over it, that kind of stuff sounds like what this guy means but balls do any 106s have it as standard

Cheers mate

Thats pretty much what I thought

I've found a bit about the 206 in Adi's pinned suspension topic, but can't find anything else - any keywords you can think of so I can find it?

106GTi's have a stiffer anti-roll bar at the rear compared to 205 GTi's (24mm vs 19mm), which will certainly help. Torsion bars are the same thickness at 19mm.

As said though, the basic suspension design is similar enough that I can't see it giving any major handling differences.

having driven plenty of both, i prefer the handling of then 205, probably just me tho! the beams are pretty much identical in set up,but come apart differently, the 205 has the nuts over the bolt setup on the end of the torsion bars, whereas the 106 has the torx/hex style bolt in the end like on an axgt(the one i lowered did anyways)
