pa402 0 Posted April 21, 2006 Does anyone know of any good places to get the above changed on my 1.9 around the Reading area for a reasonable cost. The clutch has been heavy for since I owned the car and now the release bearings are making a unwelcome noise. I would be tempted to do the cam belt myself but my dad (much more mechanically minded than me) has warned me not to due to me not having the correct tools. Therefore what tools would this require? Jonmurgie 2 Posted April 21, 2006 Clutch is easy(ish) and covered in my guides here: http://www.mdracing.co.uk/howto.asp Cam belt is fairly easy too and you don't really need any special tools, just something that will lock the cam pulley in place (a bolt works fine!). If you've not got one, get yourself a Haynes Workshop manual and have a bash at it all yourself, it's much more pleasing that way! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted April 21, 2006 Cambelt on an 8v is far easier than a clutch change, only awkward part is un-doing the crank pulley bolt & re-tightening it properly again (a bolt won't do in this case) but a proper flywheel locking tool is only about £8 & makes the job so much easier. Usually different at every garage but about £100 for a cambelt imo is fair. (if you fancy an hourish drive I might be able to do the cambelt sometime soon). Be1 (reverse next to first) have a particularly heavy clutch mechanism though so don't mistake this as a sign of it needing a new clutch. Be3 should be nice & light though imo. Graham. Thanks for the info, I might take you up on the offer of the cambelt as I don't know any specialists or trusted garages around here, and from reading some of your posts you seem to know what you're talking about! Where abouts are you based? Heavy clutch could just be down to the cable.. when i changed mine it made it a hell of a lot smoother Mine is a Be3, I think the cable does need changing as it is heavy and the bite is very high. I'm pretty sure the clutch is on its way though as there is some judder on launch, however I never have any problems selecting or engaging gears? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
