apoligies if this is a really simple question and has covered a million times but i;ve only had the car a week so i'm at at the bottom of my learning curve at the mo !! :D

i have a 1.9 309 gti on a h plate .... i have a knackerd gearbox and need to know what second hand gear box will fit ....... eg . will a 209 box fit , does it have to come from a 1.9 or will a 1.6 box fit ..... etc

and can u let me know what the diff is between a TU and a XU engine so i at least have a tiny bit more knowledge :D and of coarse it would handy so i know what topic to actually post in ...lol

thanks

the 1.9 309 GTI uses a BE3 with 1.9 ratios in it, you can fit any BE gearbox but if you fit a BE1 you will have to mess about with the clutch cable/pedal/linkages/reverse cable, so your best off sticking with a BE3 box (the way to tell is the position of reverse, if its behind 5th its a be3 box. Either the 1.6 or 1.9 box will fit (as will the mi16, turbo diesel, many boxes from 306, 406, etc - just pick the ratios to suit you. Putting the 1.6 box on the 1.9 makes it a fair bit quicker but it isnt so comfy for motorway crusing).

Change the clutch and release bearing while u have it off, otherwise they'll break the week after (sods law).

TU are the smaller, later engines fitted to lateish base model 205s/309s and 106s/306s. There are a few differences, like they use MA gearboxes, sit verticle rather than tilted, have the exhaust coming off the front not the back.

Be aware that the early Mi16 boxes are BE1 - i.e. lift up reverse, but yet they use a BE3 clutch release mechanism.

Later Mi16 and S16 boxes are BE3 in all repects.
