13's 14's Or 15's?

this is something ive been pondering for a while now so see what you think...

1. running in the 1400cc class wheel width is set to a max of 7J.

2 its always been said that anything larger than a 15 inch rim (so 16 inch +) ruins the handling on small hatchbacks. or at least thats what ive always thought.

the question is which o.e peugeot wheel rims offers

A) the best tyre selection for tarmac stage rallying.

 the best availability of wheel rim themselves (here i thought pepperpot 14's)

C) the best option for a 1400 engine (here i thought 13 inch rallye steelies)

as it seems the bigger the rim diameter the wider the rim i.e 13" x 5.5J, 14" x 6J, 15"x 6.5J is there a noticeable benefit in grip from the 15 inch rim over the 13 inch rim?

My experience has always shown me that the wider the tyre the better the grip, hence on my drift car I have 205 width front and 175 rears to help break traction at the rear.

You will find tho that it work's the opposite in the wet with a thinner tyre offering more grip than a wide one! I had a street rod beetle running 225 rears that in the dry stuck like s*it to a blanket but in the wet wanted to let go a lot lot sooner than in the dry :) , when changing down to a 205 width traction was much better giving improvements of over 25% extra speed carried through corners. :D

Trial and error is the only way to find the best setup for your car (and the most fun!!). Each car will behave differently from another depending on tyre size, compound, side wall profile size, road surface, weather conditions, inflation, suspension set up. The only real way to find what works best for you is to test different set ups and see but I would suggest that the 1.9 pepperpots are a good choice as putting 195 width tyres is a good compromise for both wet and dry tarmac work.

Remember tho it won't make a lot of difference wot size you put on iff the tyres are crap to start with. A good soft tarmac tread tyre from yokohama in a 185 width will out grip Kwick Fits budget special in a 195 width (maybe even in a 205 width).

U can fit XR2 rims (6" not 5.5") with spacers and use a 175 50 r13 - although now Bridgestone have withdrawn the RE720 in that size you are a bit limited for tyre choice - just Dunlops I think
