Rear Beam Almost Off!

Recommended Posts

Guest kinker_rocks

Been working on getting the rear beam off for a swap. Got everything slackend off, usual problmes, mounts cracked in half and rusty clamp thing. Just the brake pipes to come off. Left them soaking to, hopefully, slacken them off a bit. One of them fancy spanner things ready and waitng to be broken out.

Couple of quick questions, have been looking over other threads and was wondering if there is anything else I could be doing when I have the beam off. There is a bit of rust under there, nowt too serious though. Was looking at cleaning that up. Is there anything else to check replace?

Off at a bit of a tangent here, but. In other threads people have been saying that 306/zx front hubs are the same as the 1.9. Is that the hub off any model? Been having problems finding 1.6 ones and fancy some bigger brakes up there.

Any help advice appreciated!

Well assuming your fitting new beam mounts (uprated?) then there isn't much else under the car there to be fair! Just sort the beam and put it back on really, any of the ruse you see will no doubt just be light surface rust and easy to deal with

Aye, I will be putting new mounts on. Just going with standard ones I think. It all seems to have gone too easy so far waiting for some brake line hell tomorrow!

You don't happen to have the torque settings for the seatbelt mounts. Only thing I can find on them in haynes is a paragraph saying don't undoo them. Also in the removal guide on the site it says the center mount doesn't need to be there, is it really there for no reson?

While you are dropping the axle think about dropping the fuel tank and having a good look under there. favourite probs are bad rust under the back seat floor and replacing the brake lines that run either side of the fuel tank..Some say the brake lines can be replaced wthout dropping the tank, but to clip them back properly needs the tank off in my experience. The last thing you nrrd is the pipes chaffing and rattling about out of sight. Best of luck.

how far forward do the prake pipes go? (the ones that go over the fuel tank)

the reason i ask is, for some strange reason the fitting on the l/h one on mine was 9mm which rounded off when i had to use a regular spanner. my brake pipe spanners are only 10, 11 and 12mm..... so i need to get a new pipe but desperately do not want to drop the fuel tank

Ta for answers, hints tips etc

My friend and i thought of a genius reason for this - to act as an extra strap for the beam if it were to fall off. Might seem a bit wierd i know, but if sumthing were to break then the whole beam could come flying off so maybe the strap prevents this?! I dunno! :o Either way, mine was knackered and irritating so i lobbed it!

I can't see how they came to the conclusion that the steel strap has anything to do with the seat belts. I checked for ages before removing mine the first time and can't see how it is meant to attach to any seat belt mountings :)

As far as I am aware the centre strap from the rear beam is to stop the fuel tank falling off if the two tiny bolts that do hold it up fail.

The stuff about it being related to the seat mounts is just an old wives tale. I'm no engineer but it seems to serve the dual purpose of stopping the tank from dropping out or the beam from falling away in the highly unlikely event of a failure in these depts. Why they never incorporated it on the 309 I don't know, but this is french logic after all!

On a 1.9 it just goes to the compensators in front of the tank, on the 1.6 it goes to the compensator in the engine bay.

The pipes only go over the tank at the sides though & it isn't hard to get them in by only dropping the back edge down.

Graham.
