Engine Starves Short After Startup ...

Recommended Posts

Dandu

Hi,

I'm in a desperate mood. Recently I suddenly had to face my engine shutting off while I was running at the motor highway. Every attempt to start up the engine failed. The starter was running ... but that's all. While checking the engine bay, everything seemed to be pretty usual. Cables seemed tight and functional. After loosing the hope to fix the problem, the car has been towed to the next peugeot dealer.

I came to the conclusion, that the ignition coil or the ignition module might be damaged. The replacement (next morning) seemed pretty straight forward. The engine kicked in as expected ... I restarted the engine thrice. Fiddling with the gas pedal and the smile came back to my face. BUT ... the forth and every forthcoming attempt to start the engine failed. Once again I had to put my face under the hood and I caught the sight of a cable, that seemed to be a bit loose. Thus I replaced the lug and ... the engine kicked in. The second attempt was successful again, I drove off and after 5 minutes ... you know, do you?

Now the car has been towed to my parking lot. Today I wanted to investigate the problem a bit deeper. I got into the car, turned the ignition and ... the engine came to life. After 10 minutes of idling the engine shut off. No revitalisation ... It seems to be a thermal problem.

I suppose, that the distributor is damaged. Do you have another idea? Perhaps I should mention, that the distributor cap and the distributor finger have been exchanged recently (approx. 2000 km ago).

Bye Dandu

To isolate the problem, run the engine until it cuts out and won't restart, and then check the following:

  1. Remove a spark plug and check that you've got a good strong spark
  2. Check that you've got fuel being injected - you should be able to smell the fuel from the open cylinder and see the fuel mist
  3. Check that you have 12v reaching the fuel pump

Hi Anthony,

much thanks for your response. Today I only got the chance to take a quick glance at the fuel supply of the car. The restart of the engine was fine. But it already shut off after only 5 seconds ... afterwards I only did the following: 1. checking the fuel pressure regulator (if the diaphragm is ok), fine. 2. checking the fuel pump voltage (while trying to restart the engine), 8-9v. Hmmm? I'm going to check the spark soon.

Id think these need 12v to work properly, and sounds like it could be a dodgy earth ??

The earth is behing the left hand rear light inside the boot behind the fabric that covers the access plate, large yellow plug along with the earths for lights etc. I only found this when changing my lights one day and forgot to plug it back in :) wondered why it wouldnt start :D

Hi Chris,

I think, it's worth the attempt. Unfortunately I can't check it out today. Much thanks!
