Nocking From Front N/s Strut

Recommended Posts

pugman

I had my 205 now for nearly 3 years and its always had a knocking noise from the front N/S strut. It seems to have got worse lately. I have done a search and found plenty of info on this problem and so i've done the following

new droplinks

new wishbone bushes

new top mounts

no play in bottom ball joint or where the pin goes into hub and i've replaced the bolt that holds it in place

I have stripped the strut down and the (standar) damper seems in good condition.

The springs are spax -35 mm i think.

One thing i have noticed is that when i compare the top of both struts the nut is much further down the thread on the O/S (about 3 or 4 threads exposed) than the N/S (1 thread exposed) and the hub casting are slightly different on either side.

Does anyone have any ideas what to try next?

(excuse my bad spelling on the title - i'm having a bad day)

Make sure your subframe bolts are tight. Had the same issue and sounded like it was from the suspension, but a swift visit from Anthony revealed loose subframe bolts.

Is it also maybe worth trying a different strut on the car? Although it may 'look' OK from a quite strip there may be some internal damage/wear...

Wheel bearings can knock too but you would hear the whine before you got the knocking.

I forgot to mention - I checked the subframe bolts and they were tight. Cheers any way
